Glass bead is sperical in shape, it is not good for removing material, it is better used for surface enhancement (shot peening). Anglular medias, ie. aluminum oxide(AlOx), black beauty, silica, is for removing or eroding material.Originally posted by sman View PostThe stuff I use comes in 80lb bags and is labeled fine and says silica. Feels finer than sand on a beach. Anything finer than this might as well be glass bead.
Quality powdercoating is very tough to remove unless you resort to a super aggresive media such as 40 grit AlOx, then you risk damaging the substrate if you are not careful. I personally will never use silica based media, and as a company we won't use it as a policy because of the health risks. AlOx is much safer. Walnut, soda, corn, glass will not touch a quality powdercoat. If you guys have any other questions on blasting medias, let me know, it's what I do.sigpicTurbo Charged LS1/T56

The particulate becomes airborne when blasted and is then harzardous to anyone not wearing protection. All the blasting we do is in enclosures with full HEPA filtered reclaim and even with that, you still get airborn particulates outside the enclosure.Originally posted by sman View PostWhats wrong with silica if your wearing your PPE?sigpicTurbo Charged LS1/T56
