  • Any Painters wanna make some cash Painting my car?

    Hey all,

I'm planning on getting my car painted with the money I get back from taxes. I'm looking for the best deal I can get, and would even be willing to help with body work. I dont know how much work would be involved.

its an 83 camaro sports coupe, has no ground effects, the front clip and driver side fender need replaced, but I already have them, and there is a small dent in the rear passenger quarter panel, other then that the car is in really good condition. the driver side door sags, I know that will have to be fixed, but i figured if the doors are coming off for paint anyways, probably a good time to fix?

I was hoping to do a metal flake blue of some sort, a mid to dark blue, haven't decided exactly yet, and probably some stipes of some sort.

if anyone is willing, or has any ideas, lemme know!

    -Jeremy

Ok, so my income tax wasnt what I was expecting, turns out if you recieve a misc income, even if its small, they charge you with a self employment tax, and cut my income tax down to almost nothing. YES!! I love getting barely a tenth of what I should have.. :\

anyways, I'm looking at painting my car myself, me and my buddy, hes painted fenders and such before, and have came out awesome looking, it will be our first time painting a full car, but we are pretty confident, and him being a perfectionist, I think it will turn out good, my question is...

does anyone know anywhere that I might be able to rent a booth from in south east michigan? I dont really wanna have to trailer my car really far to paint it, I live in monroe, which is about 30 minutes north of toledo, and an hour south of detroit..

or if you know someone who has a booth or something that might let me paint my car there, Id be willing to pay to use the booth, I just want to get this car painted, Im tired of seeing it in the condition it is in.

                  any help would be appreciated.

Couple of questions I would ask you if I were a painter...

What color and what all are you painting? 2 stage Base paints are cheapest. Some colors are more expensive than others. Blacks, Whites, Yellows are cheaper than Reds, Blues, Greens, etc.

Do you have a specific car model paint color in mind? Say the blue off a Corvette or the Red off a Viper? If so the paint may be a 3 stage paint which means much more money. Is the paint choice have a lot of metal flake or pearl to it? Much more money than base paint. Even the stock silver you've got comes in thousands of different varieties and depending upon the amount of flake in the paint can be very expensive.

Depending on whether you want to paint the door jambs, engine bay, rear decklid, and etc to match you can spend much more than if you just wanted the car's body painted. I would suggest you consider the OEM color of your car. That way you have fresh paint at a low cost and you can open your hood and doors without people noticing the paint difference.

You have to decide what you want to do with it to determine how much you will spend. My car was pretty clean with very little body work left to be done. I had my bird painted with a pearl red that was different than my stock red and did not have the jambs, engine bay, or decklid painted with that paint. I also had a base black stripe painted on and my out the door price with no storage fees was $3500. Knowing the price of materials and work involved I would say I got a fair price. But that was having a pro shop work on the car and the paint comes with a warranty of 5 years against any defect.

Some tips that can save you money.

                      1.Shop around.
                      2. Ask painters for reference shots or demos of their work
                      3. Think outside the box. There are some talented paint students at local schools that do nice work. I saw a true flame last year that I nearly shat myself when I found out a high school kid did it.
                      4. Also consider different paint schemes. Because of the stripe my car is unique and I saved some money because the shop used black (cheaper) paint on 1/2 the car.

                      5. If you choose to get a different color, you can find some deals on OEM paints. Say you like the redfire metallic off of the current mustang. Well because of the common use of that paint it is cheaper and more available. While if you chose Candy Apple Red from House of Kolors you will spend double or even triple!!!

I wanted a metallic red. I chose this color... Barcelona Red Metallic used on 2007-2009 Toyota Yaris, Prius, and etc. It made things much more reasonable.

                      6. Do as much prep work yourself. If you take a car that is already sanded, dissasembled, and perfect all the painter needs to do is paint. That will cut your cost by a 1/3 or even a 1/2.
                      7. Do not go into this project thinking it will be cheap. Paint supplies stack up quick. In one box, I had $1000 in paint, thinners, and etc.
                      8. Make sure whatever you want your car to look like you have the mods done before you take it to paint. (Hoods, Spoilers, Ground Effects).

                      Good Luck!

This is the car I dropped off at the shop...

Yeah, my car is a light blue, and I hate it, so repainting oem is not going to happen, I want a darker blue, the color ive been really thinking about is chevy's bermuda blue that they put on the suburbans, tahoes, and some pickups, its pretty sweet looking, if thats too expensive, Id just pick a simalar blue I guess.

I would do it all, jams and all, engine bay would probably be black, and I would have no problem doing the prep work myself, thats why I'm thinking that I just might spray it myself.

Spraying paint is not hard, it just takes a ton of patience and you have to take your time. Also while your spraying don't try to do it all in one coat of paint, several thin coats of paint will turn out better than a couple heavy coats. Plus the color will be even with several thin coats. Also if your doing it yourself a big cost saver is using a gravity fed paint gun. If you use a bottom feed half of your material will end up on the floor. If you do decide to have some shop paint your car, do like suggested above, buy a couple packs of 400 gritt sand paper get out the hose and start wet sanding the car. Also if you circle any dents on your car before you take it to the paint shop the body guy will love you, but he will find more.

Anyways i wish you luck, but you can paint your car in your garage if you get some good painters plastic and you clean up your garage good. It's just nice to have a booth because then you don't have to worry about dust, or bugs that for some reason like to fly into clear coat.

Finally don't skimp on your materials, i mean you can do stripes like said above and i think that is an awesome idea, but when buying the clear coat and the primer do not skimp, they make a ton of different qualities of clear coat for a reason. Spending 3500 on a paint job sounds pretty good, and if they guarantee it for 5 years that is very good.

Well good luck on your painting project, when it's all done you'll be happy you did it yourself.

P.S. Remember to make sure that your products will work with eachother. I have heard that not all clears are compatible with all color coats. I am sure the same goes for primers as well.

If you choose to spray it yourself, PPG is good for the price. Dupont is probably better but more $$$ and HOK is $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$!
