okay, so we are probably looking for rodent damage then.

okay, so, vss plugged in. wires that were hanging WERE from the vss, but NOT at the tranny, the wires were ripped out of the harness why up front.
fixed, car is drivable again, just in time to store it.

UPDATE:
picked the car up last night, felt good to be able to drive it again. now i can start fixing the front suspension again where I left off, I think over winter i will be putting new upper A-arm bushings, new ball joints, new strut mounts and struts. that "should" fix any clunking im getting in the front end. as well as some new rear shocks.
