They finally got Anita down to surgery about 5:30pm. The docs say everything went as good as they expected, no complications or surprises. She lost very little blood. They said this kidney (her left one) looked bad and it was the correct thing to do to get it removed. They expect the antibiotics to be able to work now with it out of there. She is still sedated and on a respirator. They expect to keep her that way for a couple of more days yet, giving her a chance to start healing before they "wake" her up.

She went in with some sort of intestinal issues and then this kidney infection sort of took over. They sedated her before they made the decision to remove her kidney, so she'll wake up not knowing she is missing a kidney! That should prove to be an interesting conversation between me and her when I tell her what's been happening these last couple of days! They said that without doing this, she would probably had no chance for recovery. So, adjusting to having one kidney and all the restrictions that will come with that, is better than the alternative.

Again, thanks everyone for your support.

Well, I just got home from the hospital and I must say that the power of prayer, combined with an amazing support group is a wonderful thing. While we were expecting another long day of watching Anita being sedated and on the respirator, we had a huge surprise when we arrived at the hospital today.

They took Anita off the respirator about 10 minutes before we walked into her room. Seeing her looking back at me was a very nice surprise. It turns out "the conversation" was not as hard as I had feared since the doctors had already told her about her kidney.

You see, she had a huge Diet Cherry Coke problem. I'm talking about 17-24 cans a day! And she did not have her diabetes controlled, either. The urologist said that much Coke will make a person continually dehydrated (which is hard on all the organs), not to mention the excess caffeine. The docs said she has already drank her last Diet Coke and I expected that to be a big issue. But, thankfully, loosing her kidney seems to have scared her enough (not to mention that she almost died) that she says she's OK with drinking water from now on. She also says she'll do better with her insulin and get her diabetes under control too.

Sounds like I'm gonna have a whole new wife! So, please pray for her to get these things under control and that she gets healthy.

                    Thanks again, everyone.

                        thats awesome news doug!!!!

you also have to be careful with water - if her body is use to being that much liquid intake and she switches to h2o she'll start to wash her system as well - ie: to much sodium loss - thats what i ran into

                            Todd,

Thanks for the advice. I'll be sure to watch her and have the doctors test her blood as we progress.

                            Ben,

Thanks for the support and the prayers. Tell Jen thanks, too. These will be difficult changers for her, but with this kind of support, it surely will help.
