  • Huron Speed Project Sleeper: Hand-Me-Downs

I picked up this rolling chassis from a member on here last winter. It was too good of a deal to pass up, so I stored it for the time being. Now I have finally been able to get it to my shop and have parts in order and a plan for it in place. Perfect timing with the Trans Am off to the painters, this will keep me busy until that comes back!

    1998 Camaro V6, base model, originally a 5-speed car.
    *Crank Windows, Hardtop car
*Already wired for a 99+ harness, V8 Cluster, 99+ Fuel tank with Racetronix pump

    The plan:
*I have a stock 99' LS1 Longblock that will go in with a sleeper camshaft. 219/227 .641"/.624" 114+4 . -6* Overlap so it will hardly have any lope and also help keep drive pressure low! Dual Spring kit, harded pushrods as well.
*Having the 4l60-e out of my Trans Am rebuilt from Detroit Gearbox.
*Circle D Triple Disc converter out of the Trans Am
*Factory 10 bolt with 3.23's out of the Trans Am
*60# Injectors from the Trans Am
*Body Mounted torque arm from the Trans Am
*Huron Speed ~NEW~ Version II Turbo Kit
*3" Exhaust with a high flow cat into a Magnaflow Catback (retain the quiet, sleeper theme!)

    Appearance:
*Black Billet Grill with the Intercooler Sprayed Black
*Nothing else, keep it looking like a stock V6!

    Wheels/Tires:
*Factory Silver 16" 5 spokes with a MT DR out back

*Currently using the wheels for this car on the Trans Am while it gets painted.

            That's Andy's old car, isn't it?

Wasn't it setup for a 4l80e as well?

Thanks guys, yep, purchased it from Andy!

Got a call yesterday on the transmission so that should be done shortly! Once I get that back I can assemble the front suspension with engine and trans out of the car and drop it in!

Just finalized my build for the 4l60-e. Reusing the good hard parts in the trans. Upgrading the sun shell, wider bands, etc.
Should receive that back shortly all freshly cleaned and painted as well.

Once this comes back I can start getting the power train all assembled on the dolly to get ready to put in the car!

What did the builder say about the trans? I'm curious as it held like a champ behind 450RWHP for a long time.

Here was the verdict on the trans:

3-4 and the Band are toast. The unit has been rebuilt before, it has a beast sun shell and a Transgo-2 shift kit installed (however very important parts of the shift kit were not installed-such as the stronger springs in the drums).
For second gear it has a corvette servo, accumulator travel is limited as per the shift kit for a smaller diameter converter.
Besides that, not much else has been replaced as the
sprags/electronics/bearings/bushings/washers/planetarys all appear to be original. Hard part wise the case/pump/planets/valve body all appear to be usable.

I am VERY happy with the trans builder as well. Very knowledgeable and trust worthy! Gives me an honest break-down of what is going on with the parts I have given him and he gives me my options, opinions/suggestions and allows me to choose from there.

Detroit Gearbox is HIGHLY recommended to anyone needing trans work!
