We are now carrying Vonage VOIP products. I am currently using their service, and have to say I am happy so far, is much clearer than my old bellsouth (AT&T)

Not to bash your product sales or anything.
What do you do if the power goes out or your internet connection goes down you will lose your service don't you?
Also the cost of the vonage service and the broadband service you need to use it is way more expensive than just a dial tone line from the phone company especially if your using a cable modem.

i dont know why people are so nervous about vonage.. i ONLY have a cell phone
Seriously, for the money you save i could definately justify 'risking' it.
for the last 7 years.. my cell phone has been sufficient.. so if i ever got home service.. you better bank on the fact it'll be a low cost service like vonage.
plus.. lots of people have internet anyway! its not like you'll buy broadband JUST to get phone service..

Yea my parents got it and when the power goes out you lose all together dont matter if you have vonage or not. My dad programed it to go to my parents cell phone so if the internet goes out then you have a cell phone to talk on. My internet goes down and its a pain but all you have to do is unplug the modem and wait 30 seconds then plug the modem back in then you got the phone back

Money you can save isn't the service around $25 or $30? Plus the cost of the equipment.Originally posted by DanO View Postits typically called a 'cell phone'

You can get 1.5 DSL service for $10 now, bundle that with your phone service plus the reliability and sound quality would not justify risking it to me, and if the power goes out your dial tone is still working and you can make calls plus heaven forbid you could also use 56k dial up service.

Do a full cost analysis.. i bet that vonage or other voip service comes out on top...
why else is AT&T pushing this "what if the power goes out" crap...
you ever ask youself what would happen if a tree took out the telephone pole near your home? yeah.. your trusty phone service wont work then..
there are too many "what if's" im not paying extra for a phone service that i can live without anyhow...
and how about this neat fact.. my whole company (55,000+employees) is switching to VOIP.. Thats a big move if they were still worried about "risks"
As for sound quality.. umm i cant tell a difference and i am on the phone AlotLast edited by DanO; August 15th, 2007, 03:48 PM.

Our comcast modem has an 8 hour (or something like that) battery so even if the power goes out, I still have phone service.- Brian Meissen

I hope those 55,000 + employees didn't switch over to vonage service though because when vonage looses the patent infringement case that verizon has against them for using their technology all their customers will be without service.
Then AT&T will probably just buy them too.

how many of you with regular phone service only have cordless phones? Power goes out those are down too. After each hurricane I also have learned that the phone companies batteries only last 12 hours then no land line phone. The patent suit will probably be thrown out as verizon is trying to enforce patents that don't really exist (it's about what the service does not how it's done) I pay $25 for my phone service, and had cable service already, the bellsouth bill was $80 a month for the same thing

The batteries are only there for short term outages for a seamless power transition.
Each and every Central Office which is where the dial tone originates has a back-up generator that automatically switches on to provide power indefinately to the infrastructure so you have continuous dial tone and all the other priority circuits out there (fire, police, hospitals, 911 service) which is where voip lacks also, the operator doesn't get a location for the 911 call if your using voip.
You could debate the pros and cons on this forever but everyone will chose what suits them best.
If you choose voip then good luck to you.
If you were paying $80 a month for DSL and phone service then you were paying way to much. It is not that high anymoreLast edited by ajaciuk; August 16th, 2007, 08:56 AM.

if they have generators why is it that after the last 3 hurricanes we had no phones for 2 weeks then? (they worked for a short time when the power went out, and are all fiber underground here) I don't have dsl (the dsl here is slower than dial up) actually when I call 911 with an updated service they get my address (I had to enter it into the system it's called e911) Our regular phone bill was $80 because we didn't pay for long distance (my family is still in MI)Originally posted by ajaciuk View PostThe batteries are only there for short term outages for a seamless power transition.
