Nissan Xterra.
I have one with 265,000 miles on it. stock Motor, trans, and axles
I have taken that thing hunting/off roading with my buds for YEARS, and have TRIED to get it stuck..

My brother has a RangeRover and we went off roading and he got stuck, and I pulled him out, in my old ragged out Xterra.

Find an old "offroad edition" for 1/4 of the price and problems of the Rand Rover...

My brothers has the snorkel, and all that crap and he has MAJOR probs with it.
It is an electrical nightmare always something going wrong..
the drivetrain is bullet proof and I am not denying that, its just the other stuff....

xjs are the best. coilsprung front suspension 4.0l are indestructable the only downfall are the axles but i had my xj for awhile and loved it I could walk over everything and the aftermarket has tons of parts for them

You Wrangler guys can suck it! If it's a Jeep atleast makes sure its an XJ (cherokee). What exactly you looking for? A DD and an offroader? Purely something to beat on? I would go out and get a 4x4 94+ nonZR2 S10/Sonoma. A buddy of mine from work has a 1997 4x4 S10 ext cab with a 4.3 auto. He put on 4 inch suspension lift, 2 inch body lift, some nice 33's, and basic bolt ons (exhaust, CAI, gearing) and it is unstoppable offroad. The cool thing about S10's is if you take it offroad and bang it up there are like 10 milllion of them in the junkyards.

I have a 94 Sonoma 4.3 Vortec 4x4. . . I LOVE IT!!! I agree with everything you said! They're easy as hell to mod, great aftermarket, hell, you can rebuild one with LT1 internals! (except the cam, crank, you know. . . )

I would get a jeep before a s10. I just want a stock 4x4 to upgrade. i will give jeep another look.

The Sonoma/S10 4.3 4x4 is good off-road and on road. . . I love the fact that it's in the kind of shape where I don't care about what it looks like, but everytime I put a little time into the finish, I'm astounded by how sexy a black Sonoma with no badges looks after a fresh polish job. . . I have a 3" body lift, soon to recieve a Dana 60 rear end and Dana 40 front axle. . . I'd like to see you find a better truck for the money. I paid $1,200 cash for mine, insurance is cheap (by comparison to the 'maro), and it handles VERY well in a foot of snow. . .

You smoking crack? The only thing wranglers have going for them is the size. There is just as much shit out there for Cherokees, 10x more room for supplies/people, same bulletproof 4.0 straight 6, and you can pick a decent one up for 3 grand.

If he's looking to just buy something stock and wheel it then YES a Wrangler is the best out there but if he's talking about modding that goes out the window. You have to understand where I'm coming from.....I work at a Truck Accessories place. I don't know the meaning of a STOCK truck. My bosses DD is a 2006 GMC 2500 rolling around on 38's pushing 550hp and 1100lb/ft of suity black diesel smoke... Our SHOP TRUCK is a 2002 S10 that lays frame...although it is a 2.2 5spd so it's slow as ****.

I dont know of any stock cherokee thats going to "out bog" a stock Rubicon. But we all drive loud F-Body's that squeak and make all sorts of noise and ride rough. I think you could stand the ride of a wrangler

I didn't say stock. Like I said, I work at an aftermarket accessories place. I don't know the meaning of stock. I can do a suspension lift, body lift, rims, and tires for what someone normally pays for the suspension lift. And an Fbody with Eibachs may bottom out but they don't bounce around like a TJ. I get sick after riding in a TJ for more then like 20 minutes. You might as well have square tires on those lil' guys.

Yeah my dad has a CJ with Leaf's all the way around and it bonces soooo bad, it just seems to never settle

How durable are the engines in cherokees? Will an engine with 150,000+ miles on it run well, assuming it was maintained well? I want something cheap (around 2-3 grand) that is reliable.

As long as it's a 4.0 in the cherokee it will go 250k+. Those straight 6's are the closest you can get to diesel longevity while still running gasoline.

XJ, TJ, CJ are model codes/names. Sorta like a Camaro is a F-body, or a Grand Prix is a W-body.

XJ - Cherokee
KJ - Liberty
YJ - Wrangler
TJ - 97+ Wrangler
CJ5 is earlier wranglers
CJ7 is later wranglers

All the wranglers have different suspensions under them. The CJ's I beleive are leaf spring suspension and TJ is Coil Springs


Don't quote me on those. I just put the lifts on.... I'm not an offroad guy at all.
