Looking for decent starter rifle

I am considering getting into shooting. I want something that I can learn to shoot with and hone my skills. I looked at a couple of rifles today, a Savage 243 .22, and a Remington A770 .22. Not looking to break the bank, just want a straight shooting starter gun.

Anybody got anything they might like to sell?

The reason for my sudden interest is I am considering joining the Air Force for their JAG (Judge Advocate General) Program at some point, and I hear that their shooting standards are pretty advanced. Someone told me that if I wanted to gain rank more quickly I should improve my aim.

Also I have always wanted to get into shooting but everyone in my family aren't cool enough for that.

One of my best shooting rifles is my Browning A-bolt .22 It's a great gun and it's only a .22 so if you are just starting out, it doesn't intimidate you. I have shot some very powerful guns but my aim seems to get worse the bigger the gun because they become intimidating.

Umm i dont know anything about guns nor do i care about them. But i found two 40 cal shells in my mustang a couple days ago. Prolly was used in a drive bye

Browning all the way, but you pay for it. I love my Browning sweet 16 shotgun that my dad got from his dad (made in belgium and worth a lot of money) Ive got a few .22's and its always fun to go out back and shoot some cans, or birds.

I think it will be helpful for you to learn how to range shots too, cause that takes some practice...

This is gonna sound stupid, but trust me, as a Marine Corps Expert Rifleman I know what Im talking about. I wouldnt even worry about buying a gun to practice with. While you might get a bit more used to being around guns you'll also probably develope some bad habits that will hurt you in the long run when it comes to qualifying. Military rifles use a special set of adjustable sites unlike anything you will find on a regular rifle. The military will teach you how to shoot, and it will be be much easier on both you and the DOD if they have a blank slate to work with. If you want to do anything work on your hand eye Coordination, video games work well for this plus the repetive button mashing will give your finger,hand and wrist muscles the endurance you will need. Im not sure what the air force is doing now but last I heard they where using that stupid electronic video range crap. You will more that likely be qualifying with a M16A2 which fires a 5.56 shell which is also known as a .223 ( just a little bigger than a .22 with a whole lot more powder behind it) but the buffer spring in those guns are so large they hardly have any recoil at all and are fairly accurate so work on your hand eye and you should be fine.

Update: I have been doing some research and think I want to buy a Winchester or Remington Semi-Auto .270 Rifle.
