  • WTB: 3.8l V6 3800

    Hey guys.

I would be interested to acquiring a 3.8l v6 3800 motor. I am going to be using it to build up a new motor for my Firebird and learn in the process. If you have one and are interested in selling it let me know how much $ you want for it. Since it is a motor that will be rebuilt I am looking for something that is not too expensive. I do not think i will need the trans or computer.

    Thanks

When it comes to engines i am pretty dumb. I think i know what i would want to replace but i don't know exacly what specs would give me the most power. If i can get on that is all together and needs to be taken apart first that would be great. I am wanting to try to make the build a father/son project with my dad.

Some of the things i will probably put in are:
      Cam
      Valve Springs
      Rockers
      Push rods
      Possibly a stroker

Beyond that i don't know what else i would need or use for extra power other than bolt-ons.

For these motors, First off are you gona keep it N/A or are you going to boost it, Boost it and a build up would make rilly nice reliable HP.. If you did some FORGED PISTONS, THE L32 RODS,KEEP THE STOCK CRANK, Mild port work to the heads, a cam, springs, lifters, pushrods, with roller rockers, a double roller chain, And a good turbo kit, you could make upwards of 450hp or more.. Depending on a turbo you go with, Now i have seen a N/A motor go as fast as 12.60 in the 1/4, But of course it had plenty of work done to it, If you would like me to do some pricing for ya just let me now, THE motor i can get just is the Block with the crank, you will need rods and pistons unless you just want stock ones and we have stock laying around too, that we can sell with that motor, but i would recummend to do it right, do a complete rebuild.. and take your time!!

Abbotts racing top end with their heads/cam/intakes will get you in the 13s NA no problem.

The way i would like to go is start off with N/A and then down the road i would turbo or super it. I want to build it so that i will not have to replace the previously upgraded internal components when i do boost it. It will a slow build project due to my budget constraints. (one part here, a couple parts there. )

I think i would still like a full motor to tare down first to see where thinks go and how they work. that is the best way i would learn to basics. If i can't find one here i might just go ebay and have it trucked in but i think local would be cheaper.

you could also get a shortblock from a gtp or grand prix. the heads and intakes are different but the shortblock is the same in the l36 grand prixs and the l67 gtp has different rods and pistons. Same black and all though. My spare bare block and crank I have for backup is from a buick regal.

Ok, I didn't know that. I will be using my old 3.8 as a backup when i do the swap.

Is there any computer program or website out there that will tell you that:

If you have this ___ block and you use these ___ specific parts that you have entered you will get aproximatly ___ much horsepower.

no, but on a stock bottom end with the abbotts top end and a manual it did 271rwhp which is pretty impressive NA. That was with custom long tube headers as well

That is definatly impressive for me. I only layed down 151 rwhp on Sean's dino. that would be over 100 rwhp increase for me. I am pretty much all stock exept for those parts i get from you.

i wouldnt build up a n/a motor to later turn it onto a FI motor... if you want n/a power you need a big cam and crazy heads... if you're gonna go FI you need a FI cam (diff specs) and preferably forged internals

I know allow of people say that, but the car means alot to me so i am not going to sell it and buy another car. I was thinking of doing a conversion but i was told that is is a real pain in the butt and hardly ever goes right.

I'd say get the parts from Justin and have hime or one of the others on this site help you figure out which parts you want to use to do the buildup. Fisr thing you have to do though is decide on some goals for this project which will tell you if you should built N/A or build for boost.
