Every town should have an all-classified ad publication like Tradin' Times in Detroit or the Wheeler Dealer in Lansing, so check out something like that in Muskegon. Also, if you're not too proud, keep an eye open on trash day, because a lot of people throw some pretty good stuff out. Finally, if you can hold out until spring, there will be yard sales upon yard sales, and you can practically steal larger items (as long as they aren't collectible) because people are too lazy to haul it out of their houses themselves, and most buyers aren't prepared to haul bigger items. Good luck!

Oh, one more tip -- if you can wait until the end of the school year at your closest college -- maybe Grand Valley State? -- students will toss away perfectly good stuff because they don't have room to take everything home. In the mean time, see if you can get ahold of the local area campus paper and look at the classifieds -- students always need money, and so stuff is always popping up for sale.

One more idea -- keep an eye open for estate sales, sometimes called tag sales -- again, unless it's something collectible, which I don't think you're looking for anyway, this stuff is just getting dumped so the relatives can clear the house and sell it.

Gawd, is all this advice making me sound like a real cheapskate?

I guess it's just that the memories of when I was just starting out and had absolutely nothing are still pretty vivid. Plus, I do like a great bargain!

When I was moving out at the end of the year there were people tossing away almost new chairs, tables, etc. They either toss them or have a party and burn them. lol

Nah, they only burn them at my beloved Alma Mater, Michigan State!

Bibles for Mexico, I don't know if they have a store up there in Muskegon (we have several in Holland), but $200 in a place like that will go a long ways.

BS! Apparently you've never been to a powerlines party at Ferris. We'd go offroading down the powerlines, get like 3 miles off the roads, light a fire, toss on furniture, and tap the keg. Goodtimes!

See, that's the difference! Three miles out, you have nothing to worrry about! At MSU, the students would take the couches out to the front of the apartment complexes, and just light 'em up right there! The students acted like they're having fun -- at least until they get handcuffed -- but it's a tense time for the East Lansing Police, Lansing Police, Ingham County Sheriff, Michigan State Police, etc., and all the fire departments. I think this activity has calmed down in recent years, but it was pretty bad in the 80's and 90's.

I wonder how many people lost their stash when their roomates took the couch out before they got a chance to get their stuff out?
