As I understand it, and someone can correct if I'm wrong or support if I'm right, mechanical gauges of any type means that the input is done right to the gauge itself. Meaning you would have an oil line straight to the gauge itself that the gauge would be using whereas an electrical gauge will have a sensor that taps into the oil line and then you only have a couple wires running from the sensor to the gauge - keeping the oil out of the interior compartment.

Correct, Mechanical means you'll have a line with oil in it inside your car running to the gauge, electrical has a sending unit on the motor and sends a signal to the gauge..

Fred, don't get mechanical. Go electrical, I'll help you run the sensor. You getting this for your oil feed line for the Precision turbo sitting in your garage? Sell your other gauges and buy some Prosports.

              +1 for ELE! Especially OIL!
I got mine @ Princess Auto (Windsor, ON) for like $40. Fairly accurate didnt feel like ordering one
I wanted to keep the OEM sensor in tact so i added a "T" fitting

bottom left of the photo, the OEM sensor is on the "extension" part, the gauge sending unit is on the "T" part. Was pretty simple, run one wire to ground, one to power, one to sending unit IIRC...
