Not at all, but if you do apply make sure you put me as your referral so I can put in some good words for ya. I'm not going to lie - the environment isn't 100% great but the CIO firmly believes he's building a world class IT department. He stocks a fridge full of water, juice, pop, and Red Bull for us. He does send us to training so that is nice. I don't get paid nearly what I think a System Administrator position should be paying, though... and if I were to use the average salary range I find on Monster and other sites for Sys Admins, I'm making less than half.



Yeah they are. The worst part is trying to find an entry level position, though. Been trying to get Dan [mcssmostwanted] in where I'm at but we haven't had any openings in Desktop Support or such to get his feet wet. All our positions are past experience/training necessary. We've had SQL Developer positions open for almost a year and still haven't been able to get anyone to fill.

I think thats the problem I am going to run into. While the Admin I position is EXACTLY the type of thing I'd like to get into, I don't have the 1 year of experience doing that type of job they require

I know I am in a tricky spot. I have to choose between taking a run of the mill support position that might never take me anywhere, OR somehow manage to jump into a spot that is a little more than what i can handle on my own and hope the company is OK with that and helps get me up to speed. (which is what im hoping for). I know I can handle some of these jobs if I just get some training on them. I'm a fast learner but i need an opportunity to start somewhere!

Thanks - but unfortunately I am not qualified enough for anything beginning with "lead" or "senior"

I thought I would be an excellent candidate for the dyno tech too considering I have general knowledge and experience with PCM tuning and engines, but it looks like there are extensive minimum requirements for that job as well.

I have been doing this job for 22 years now and I can't even do all the things listed in the description and I have worked every where in this Building!
Don't let that scare you!
If you know something about Engines and you are willing to learn and you don't mind working Afternoon shift for a while then go for it!
There isn't anybody out there that has all those quailifications for that job.

Most places are much more looking for the "right" person more than someone who meets every single one of their requirements.

I had no experience in managing any of the applications I support but plenty of general IT experience from college and internships. If you put in the work during college, get good grades, then it shouldn't be hard to find something even in MI. Joel put forth the effort in college and hopefully should be able to find something, well maybe not as much effort during AV hours at GV!

Joel did you take Cobol at GV, we are always hiring Programmers with Cobol experience because it is a dying skill.

Sorry Nate . Have you tried again recently? Right now probably is not a good time, because they just hired in all the interns for the summer. But in September after they leave and before the end of the year I would imagine is your best bet.

Nope, I never took a class in that. I have always leaned more towards the administrative and management side of the field so that wasn't one of the electives I ended up taking.

I'm confident I will find something, it just might take me a while considering applying for one job alone can burn a few hours. I was lucky to walk right into a job at Continental out of college too, but unfortunately it didn't end up being permanent.

I hear you - I've been in IT for 5 years now and having the 5 years experience with my college degree is a huge plus. I just wish where I'm at now valued a college degree. My manager mentioned to the CIO that I was graduating in June with my Bachelors and his response was "What value does Brian's degree bring to the company? None..." Him and I are going to have a coming to jesus talk once that degree is in my hands.

It really shouldn't be hard to find anything in MI, it's just finding a position that doesn't require 5+ years of experience, doesn't have a "Sr" title attached to it, etc that's hard to find.
