  • 1st gen labor time guide

If you own a classic vehicle you need to know what you are being quoted for labor. I've owned a few and have dealt with many shops and always hear the same thing "My book doesn't go back that far" then they guess - which costs you money!!! This book covers 8 years of labors times through 1968.

    $15.00 obo plus shipping

This is an excellent idea for older cars (anything over 15 years old).

I found a GM dealer service manual for '81 that shows different numbers for (at the time) in-warranty work and non-warranty work.

According to this book, the general rule of thumb is that they stick you for 40-50% more for out of warranty work than what the dealership was allowed to charge back to GM for in-warranty work. So, if the dealership really was to zap you 2 hours labor to change a door glass motor on your '98 F-body, yeah, they really are sitting on their ass for 40 minutes of it.

I've actually had 2 Pontiac dealerships turn me away because they refuse to (i.e. don't know how to) work on these cars anymore . Just based on that alone, I doubt my car will ever see the inside of another dealership again.
