  • Feeler 1976 Pontiac 400 WS6 motor

    Just a Feeler here...
I'm thinking about selling one of my engines, just because I'm doubtful I will be doing anything with it.

1976 Pontiac 400 Engine Block, Heads, crank, rods and Pistons.
Came out of a WS6 optioned Trans Am.
All will need to be gone through and re-machined.
Heads have been re-done, but will need to be cleaned up and re-milled due to sitting around. Block was ready, but will need to be re-honed or possibly bored - standard bore currently.
Crank - not sure if its salvageable - it was ground, but again...sat around and had some surface corrosion.
Have front cover, intake, a seal/ring kit, and other miscellaneous stuff.

I also have the Matching BOP TH350 trans that went with this engine, that has around 70K miles, but I would recommend a rebuild as I've never ran it.
(Also have a BOP 400 sitting around too).

Not sure what the old Pontiac motors bring, so looking for offers.
    $250?

I'll take your word for it. I was told that's what it came out of as it was the higher horsepower engine option at the time at a whopping 185hp. (But that's easily fixed)

      6X 1976 400cid 185hp 2.11"/1.66" valves D-Port, 101CC "126" castings.

(Strange...but I always remember reading that these were a 98CC head...)

      Edit:
The reason I was thinking these were 98cc's is because they have a "4" stamped on one of the bosses.

FWIW, the original WS6 package back in the 70s and 80s was a suspension and brakes upgrade...had nothing to do with the powertrain.

But...6x heads are some of the more desirable heads from that era...it would be an indicator that it is indeed the big motor from those years...

Again, good luck with the sale...

In 76 (and 75) the 455 (200 HP) was the top engine option for the Firebird lineup.
The TA 6.6 was the high HP 400 engine and it's debut was 1977 (200 HP) and continued thru `78-9 (220 HP). These engines used the small chamber version of the 6X head(4 stamp) for a compression ratio of approx 8.1;1 and used a specific hotter camshaft. The large chamber heads had the standard 7.6;1 compression. I transplanted one of these engines into my old `79 T/A, a simple cam intake and carb swap along with headers made this a nice pkg.
