2 Speed GM Trans For Sale $20

Removed a 2 speed GM trans from my 1971 Pontiac GT-37. This was not the original trans in that car. I thought it was a 3 speed when I bought it and since have installed a Turbo 400. This trans is light weight and is the same size as a Turbo 350. Even uses a turbo 350 drive shaft. The trans worked fine prior to removing it and the fluid was red on color and not burned. Drained the fluid for storage. Has the torque convertor. Would make a great trans for drag racing. Has the Olds, Buick, Pontiac bell housing pattern.

Is it a powerglide? Aluminum or cast iron case? Or is it one of those wierd jetaway BOP deals. If its an aluminum case powerglide, I would advertise it on motown muscle or southside street cars, etc. Even Craigslist is a good place to sell a glide. GLWS. Eric L

much stronger, and at that level a manual valvebodied trans is what is usually run so your making the shift, and one less shift with a 2 speed trans is one less to miss. You'd better have a hell of a motor though because the car is gonna need a lot to get off the line with that type of gearing.

A lot of the Dragsters and Altered cars run the 2 speed powerglide transmissions for Drag Racing. They are a lot more consistent for the Classes that they run them in (usually heads up racing 9.90, 8.90, or 7.90 Class).
The Powerglide transmission also has less power loss through the transmission.
These are approximate values of power loss through the Transmission:
Powerglide _____ 18 hp
TH-350 ________ 36 hp
TH-400 ________ 44 hp

The first car I ever owned had a Powerglide 2 speed transmission in it. It was in my 1970 Camaro.
If you held the throttle at Wide open it would shift out of 1st gear at about 70mph. I broke that transmission 2 different times.
The 1st time I broke the planetary gear set in it and it totaled the transmission.
The guy at the Trans shop said he never saw a planetary gear set fail like that in a street car?
That was an expensive lesson. Then I failed the transmission again 2 years later. It was getting costly for a teen ager in high school. So I decided I better learn how to rebuild them myself.
After that I installed a THM 350 (that I rebuilt) in the car.
Then I put a THM 400 (that I rebuilt) in it before I sold the car.

Its not a strength thing, its a weight thing more than anything. A stock powerglide is no stronger than a th350, but the aftermarket parts are out there to make it strong. You want to have a fairly light, high powered car to use a glide. And to be honest, most people are using a dedenbear case. The main use for a stock case glide now a days is in medium powered bracket cars. Eric L
