(Local): 1967 RS SS project/roller for sale

I am not affiliated with this car in any way, I just spotted it near my house and figured id post a heads up in case anyone is looking.

This car is for sale at 27 mile road and Romeo Plank. It is a white coupe with a black bumble bee stripe on the front. No engine, no hood, but looks complete otherwise. From a distance there is some surface rust visible, but it looks pretty solid.

I don't know any other details. If anyone wants more info I can stop and snap a couple pics.

Plans to fix my gimp spine and acquire a garage have to come first sequentially but it could be a good candidate for that! I'd rather use a base model car, but who knows this thing could be a clone for all i know.

I don't recall a Penske car being a RS, and I think the first one was a '69.

And cloning one to a RS is rather expensive, so I'd wager it's real if it's unrestored.

I thought 68 (first year of the DZ) was the first year for the Penske Camaro. I've seen models of a 67 but no actual 67 that were original race cars.

No Penske had camaro race cars in 1967.

Compare the rear spoiler in both photos. The car is the same but the spoiler height is different. First picture is at Sebring, late March '67, the second picture is at Continental Divide Raceway in Colorado, August '67. Donohue ran this taller rear spoiler at the Bryar T/A, Marlboro T/A, & CDR T/A. The car was damaged in a trailering accident on it's way to the following race and the
spoiler was not seen again.





Photos from Sebring, March 1968. This was a 12-hour endurance race (also an official part of the Trans-Am schedule) where the Trans-Am cars were included in the same race as the Porsche 907 prototypes, GT40s, Lola T70s, etc. Mark Donohue and Craig Fisher finished an amazing 3rd overall and 1st in Trans-Am. A truly outstanding accomplishment. Many thanks to Pat Ryan for forwarding these Jerry Kroninger photos for us to enjoy.

Notice the numbers for each car, 15 & 16. Each car in the photos below wears the opposite number than it did in the actual race. The car with the vent window (wind wing) in the door is the '67 lightweight car from the previous season. It was under minimum weight and did not get run through tech inspection. They ran the '68 through tech inspection twice by changing the car number in a closed airplane hangar between each inspection. A risky proposition but they pulled it off successfully.

The other giveaway is that the one car doesn't have the side markers on the front fenders. They supposedly put the 68 grille and taillights on the 67 (that wasn't allowed to race again?) and slipped it through tech

Maybe i should clarify that when (if) i build a penske clone, im not going to be overly concerned with getting all of the historical details accurate i enjoy the conversation though!

No big deal but thanks for keeping an eye out. It gave me the idea to give my 92 a Penske color theme but I think I will stick to using a color that is extra left over from a project to save money. I been thinking of doing silver with a matte clear.
