Something newer, better on gas, and with low miles. Have a few options I'm looking at, it's hard to find vehicles that get good mileage but can also fit my tools for work and handle the occasional trip to Lowes to pick up materials, so the vehicles I've been looking at are all compromises, they aren't cool, but they serve the purpose I need them for. I've been looking at HHR's, considered a Cobalt sedan, and even took a look at newer Impala's, as well as a few mid-size crossover SUV's, but I'm still undecided.

The cobalt's trunk opening sucks. The trunk size is decent but I can't fit most coolers in the trunk. Damn crash regulations. I think the HHR might be a better choice. I was actually considering buying a HHR SS panel version in 2008.

I have a couple friends who own HHR's, they say it's a love it or hate it deal with them. I think it'll serve it's purpose. I looked at Cobalts and decided that I wanted to avoid them if I could help it, because of the small trunk opening and the inability to haul longer objects.

I would pass on the HHR, but honestly, it's one of very few vehicles that I thought I could tolerate on an everyday basis, it's within my price range, and I'm not willing to sacrifice the gas mileage, since that's the whole reason I'm getting a smaller car/crossover.

Looking back now, I wish I had got a HHR over my Cobalt. A few MPG is worth the ability to haul stuff.

The gas mileage isn't really all that different, that's why I chose the HHR.

Nick why not start the bird get it driving in current state, run it to dealer and trade it for your choice of vehicle.
Since your looking for practical why not consider a mini van then you can haul all you want. I know they are not cool but they beat the hell out of a small pickup because you can haul stuff in bad weather.

The bird will run and drive, but you know dealers want to buy cars for nothing and sell them for 300+% profit. And a minivan is only going to get marginally better mileage than my S10, I average between 19 and 21mpg's in the truck. I drive 2 hours each way to work, I need something that's going to save me money on my commute.
