  • What's it worth? 1966 Comet Cyclone GT

I know this isn't really the right venue for a Ford procudct, but I bought a car the other day that has been in my family for many years, and i have no intentions on keeping it. The car is a red 1966 Mercury Comet Cyclone GT with the 390ci motor and auto trans. The car also has a 9" rear end with a posi unit. The car is very original, but i don't believe the motor or the trans are vin matching parts. The motor runs very well, starts and idles great. The trans is a C6, and shift perfect.
My Grandpa had bought the car back in the late 70's, and then sold it to my uncle in the late 80's. My uncle painted the car, put headers on it, electric fan, a few aftermarket gauges, and that's about it. My uncle was looking to just get rid of it, so i bought it with the intentions of re-selling as i have to many projects of my own. The problem is, I have no idea what the car is actually worth

I'm not looking to make a killing of the car, and i don't want to ask a price that's gonna let it sit in my garage for the next two years until the right buyer comes along. I want to sell the car at a fair price for myself, and the potential buyer. The car is not perfect by any means, but is very nice. The rear bumper will need to be re-chromed. The front drivers fender is rotting at the bottom, and the early 90's paint job isn't holding it's shine anymore. The tires will need replaced, and their is surface rust on most of the parts under the car. But everything is nice on the interior, and the carpet was replaced in the late 90's. Floor pans are solid, and so is the trunk. The door open and shut very nice, and the glass is all perfect as is most of the chrome. So anybody have a ballpark price.....the car is for sale! Take a look at some of the pictures and let me know, thanks guys!

That seems to be the consensus with everyone i talk to about it. There doesn't seem to be many out there, they made about 14,000 of these. In this same year they made about 100,000 GTO's. So I know it's rare, but i really don't think it's worth a fortune. I think it's gonna be one of those deals "it's worth what somebody's willing to pay"..........and end up in my garage forever and ever until i find a buyer lol.

I haven't researched a Comet in quite a while, but do have a couple of questions...

        - what's going on with the one rogue wire to the distributor?
        - do you have any paperwork?
        - do you have a Marti report? (If not, get one...)
        - do you have any miscellaneous parts for it (many are one-year-only) like the center wheel caps?

All that aside, this isn't exactly the right time of year to be selling a car, but I think I'd ask $8000 for it and take $7000 if you wanted to move it now...but you are correct, it's only going to bring what someone is willing to pay for it...

to what Jeff said, but I thought I saw somewhere that the Marti reports start with the 1967 model year? So there's a chance you may not be able to get the info on your 1966.

          Cool car! GLWS!

              Thanks for the info Jeff!
When I got the car it wasn't running right. I put a new distributor wire going to the cable I think that's the "rogue", wire your speaking off...i think.
I don't have a "Marti" report, and haven't heard of one before. I'll have to do some research on that. If it's worth it then i'll get one for sure if available.
The only paperwork i have for the car is a clean title, registration, and original owners manual.....nothing else.
I really don't have any "extra" parts for the car. The back windown trim was taken off the car at one point, and that's included with the sale. The original windshield washer cannister with the "Comet head" on it was in the trunk. And I have the original bumper jack and accesories in the trunk aswell. That's about it.
The car does run good for how long it's sat, and it drives good aswell. Brakes, turn signals, headlights, everything seems to work. I did talk to one guy that knew about Comets that stated it should probably be put up for around 10K, but may bring as little as 6K this time of year. If it will bring that much more money in the Spring, I probably can make room in the garage until then.....

After a quick search, you would be correct, sir...nothing for '66...

Not to thread hijack, but what wheels do you have on your Camaro, Adam? Those aren't those Berger/Mallett specials are they?

Gary's correct. Just some C6 Z06 rims with 295's in the back.

I think I'd sit on it until Spring if you have the room. Just my 2 cents. Not to thread jack either but this isn't the time to sell a car because I've had the El Camino for sale for 2 weeks and haven't gotten a single call on it. I like the Comet though a cool looking car with a full backseat just what a guy with 3 kids like me needs.
