Cupholders have been a problem for a long time . . . in my '98 I never use the one in the center console, it's too close to the shifter so you have to awkwardly hold your wrist way up high while you are shifting . . . I always use the flip-out one on the passenger side instead, which I have to admit is a nice design.Originally posted by MP81 View PostUnfortunately it seems a lot of vehicles have ill-placed cupholders...I know Clarkson specifically mentions the placement in the R8 will have you spilling your drink if you go to hit second or fourth. Mine are placed decently - but in order to keep my coffee travel mug upright, I have to shove a bunch of napkins in there because it's too big and doesn't have any type of size compensation/adjusters. The new cool thing is the bottle holders in the doors - but now you lose use of your map pocket with that, and I'd only put a bottle in there, unless you like to spill shit everywhere...
This is a perennial problem with ALL coupes & convertibles, though . . . the seats, console, and center stack are all fighting for room in the middle of the car. You don't want the cupholders in front of the shifter because the cups block the radio & HVAC controls . . . but right behind the shifter is a problem for the aforementioned reasons . . . . but if it's too far to the rear then you can't reach it without bending your arm backwards, plus you spill it with your elbow.
Most manufacturers IMHO don't pay enough attention to interior design (including GM) despite years and years of feedback from Consumer Reports, the major auto mags, and countless customer surveys. But it's a very difficult thing to get just right - I know as I used to do ergonomic switches on the armrests, center stack, and overhead. I sympathize with the engineers who struggle with it . .sigpic

Yup, absolutely get where you're coming from. I do Perceived Quality for automotive interiors - and one of our segments of evaluations is ergonomics/HMI. And some of it is atrocious. We did a luxury vehicle study with some real high end cars, and there were quite a few cars where, in order to make the cupholders in a viable location - the shifter was shoved forward - in turn blocking HVAC controls itself, which is even worse because its always there.Originally posted by MikeM View PostCupholders have been a problem for a long time . . . in my '98 I never use the one in the center console, it's too close to the shifter so you have to awkwardly hold your wrist way up high while you are shifting . . . Personally I always loved the two cupholders that were in the back of the center console -- they very back -- they were great for putting bottles or cans of pop back there while you're driving.- Brian Meissen

Just an update - I talked to Linda at GM today and she said that she's arranging the survey website to send out. Furthermore, she plans to attend Camaro Superfest and will be able to survey show participants there too.
