VBulletin released 4.0 Gold yesterday which means that it's now stable for production environments.

I want to wait a bit before upgrading mostly because I want to make sure that our core add-ons remain - shoutbox, Garage, Arcade...

I'm uploading the "Gold" version to my beta site now. I found a style that I like that I think I can use as my base to customize to fit our needs. It'll be a new look for the site. Still dark colors but a little lighter too.

Well guys - unfortunately vb4 will not be coming this week.

There's 14 mods out of 19 that I have deemed to be essential or important to have a vb4 equivalent before we upgrade. For example, if I were to upgrade right now, we'd lose the RSVP feature of the Event forum and we'd lose the Garage feature. I'm willing to lose *some* functionality of non essential things (like the activity bars that show up to the left of everyone's posts) but not our core features of the site.

Here's how it's looking right now...

39 out of 59 are either "Essential" "Important" or "Nice to Have" (20 of them I'm willing to sacrifice to upgrade to vb4)
28 do not have a vb4 version or comparable product
                7 have a vb4 version
                4 have a comparable product

For the essentials and important ones:

Auto Database Backup - Important - Cron based automatic backup of vbulletin database. - Yes - VB4 Version
Automatic Thread Tagger - Important - Extracts keywords from thread titles and uses these as thread tags. - No
Cron Based Mail Queue - Important - Send queued e-mails in batches via the vbulletin cron system - No
Cyb - Advanced Permissions Based on Post Count - Important - Cyb - Advanced Permissions Based on Post Count - No

Unfortunately we're at the mercy of the developers of those mods. I'd love to get it out asap but I also don't want to take away from all the time people have put into creating their garages, etc. For some it's no big deal, for others I know it's not the easiest to get all the pictures together and uploaded and everything.

I'm seeing a lot more mods that we use coming out for vb4. I'm almost ready to just disable the garage temporarily and do the upgrade. That way we can upgrade and have the new forum and when the new version of the Garage comes out we can upgrade that product and be good to go.

Would anyone be dramatically against us upgrading if I had to temporarily disable the Garage, Casino, and Arcade? Again, temporarily.

Brian: Of course, a lot of that technical stuff you talked about is completely lost on some of us old geezers. Like I mentioned in another thread. I find it hard to read some things on this new format. When there is a quote used in a thread reply, the quote is in a white box, and the writing is so light I can't read it unless I highlight it by dragging my mouse over the text. Will the new look still be further refined to make things easier to read?

All you guys that say "Change is good" sound like a bunch of Obama supporters! LOL
