  • Attention: Language use, everyone please read

We have been seeing a lot of bending and circumventing the rule for using EXPLICATIVES AKA Swear words recently by using symbols to get around the filter. Things like “a$$hole, b1tch, fvck” are considered blatant and intentional circumvention of the system and will not be tolerated. If you feel you have to talk this way to get your point across please do it somewhere else. Most of us can get the gist of what you are saying without it.

If you do use the real words when typing accidentally, you don’t have to filter yourself that’s what we have a filter for. The allowed words will be left alone and the not allowed ones will be filtered and starred out like this “*****”. People will still know what you are saying. Please just try not to use them.

This is the only warning for everyone that this will not be tolerated and anyone who continues to do this will be given a temporary vacation from the site the next time it happens. Furthermore if it continues after a temporary ban the individual will be given a permanent ban from the site.

There are only a few doing this but we wanted to make everyone aware as a reminder.

Here is the rule directly from the site rules page followed by a link.

    Expletives
Expletives are allowed to some extent, but it is left to the user to use best judgment when swearing. As a car forum, we do understand some things get members heated enough about their own vehicle to use vulgarity. If you feel you must swear to get your point across, please censor your language appropriately so as to not be overly offensive. (IE: S***, B****, Etc.) Swearing at other members, or directing an expletive at a member's vehicle, is not welcome. Please try to keep expletives to a minimum, and obviously some expletives hold more meaning than others. Please use your best judgment when typing a thread, post, or response -- one's own reputation can be tarnished by excessive vulgarity.

Guys, let's really break this down for you. The point of the swear filter is not to worry about offending anyone -- to some extent. Yes, we do filter out the "F-bombs" because that can be more offensive to our older generation members here. I do not want our more mature members feeling dirty while they read the site simply because they were raised in a period of time where they gave power to meaningless words [just my opinion]. That's how they were raised, and no matter what, that's how they're going to feel about foul language. To me, that's just giving it the power to be vulgar, but that's not the point. Likewise, it's also 100% understandable that those who can use their language wisely and not use vulgar language all the time is going to be respected and seen in a better light than someone who's cussing up a storm every moment of the day. I know I myself have read posts where it's entirely littered with vulgarity and I thought less of the person's intelligence, and less about the person in general. But let's be honest, I can have just a foul of a mouth as anyone on here.

What it entirely boils down to, and I honestly mean that this is the entire reason why we actually have the swear filter -- people do not visit this site at work because you never know WHAT you might find in a thread. We're trying to combat that and make it easier to view the site in a WORK environment. Another thing that we implemented to make it easier to distinguish the two (although not fully implemented to the best of its ability) is the NWS tags that are used in the NWS forum. When you open a NWS thread, immediately you see "[NWS] Thread title" and hopefully can then have enough time to click out or hit back before the content loads. Granted, most people here might not care at work with tons of ****s and *****es being dropped, but if my boss spied over my shoulder and saw it, ehhh maybe not that great of an indicator on me.

So, in recap, I am the dictator... and I do set the rules... BUT I'm doing it for the better of everyone so that people can come to this site and not feel 1) offended or 2) embarrassed at what their coworkers or boss might see over their shoulder.

    'Nuff said, end of story.
