Recently I emailed all the members that hadn't been to the site since August 31st, 2005. I let them know that their account was about to be deleted for inactivity, and that if they wanted to keep the account to visit the site or shoot me an email. It's been about a full week, so I went ahead and flushed the inactive members. Just figured I'd throw a post up because I know someone's going to go "Hey, I thought we had over 200 members, now we only have 173.." That's why! On a positive note, now that the member list is flushed of the people that haven't visited for 180 days, we now have over 50% ratio of Active Members compared to the current Member List.

What would be the purpose of that?
An extra 50 members is too much to keep track of?
maybe if it was 18 months, that seems better.
If I drop off the radar, I guess you'll know why.
I have never, and likely never will, re-register with a site that deletes me. Even when I was the 6th member, with the site for 3 years, they deleted me, I'm done there.
I have never understood what is the rush to delete people - unless they are abusers, which means they should be removed for cause. In the car club that I cordinate, the absolute number one complaint from members is being deleted off a site - and this is usually done during the winter!!!!! What is the point?
I would certainly hope that you review this policy. If somebody returns from vacation the past month and finds that you'd deleted them, they might be ticked.

This wasn't just an impromptu decision that they weren't forwarned about in advance. When I purged, I set it up to only purge those who's post count was under 10 posts, this was because we had about 30-40 people that registered on the site and literally never came back. When the website was upgraded to VBulletin, all inactive members were sent emails urging them to visit the site again and to see what the new site had to offer. That was back in the beginning of December. Not to mention, all registered users are sent a Forum Update email newsletter that's sent out on a weekly basis. The first newsletter was sent out December 16th, and has been sent every week since then. They've had plenty of chances to visit the site in the past few months, and I've sent numerous emails to inactive users in the past two months trying to get them back. There's a LOT of people that signed up when the site was first created last year in the spring and haven't came back since then. There's more to it than it seemed in the first post of the thread.Originally posted by 02hawk796What would be the purpose of that?

You know what, if they aren't active for that long then I don't see a problem. If they are going to be active, hell, even mildly interested log in once a month. Plus if you sent them all an email and the ones that didn't respond get ticked, tough, keeps the site clean with active members and they had plenty of chances and opportunities. There are a lot of sites that do that. I've had several things that I've registered for or signed up for and used once that after 6 months or a year, they delete you unless you log in or email them. Works for me.

Yeh, like for instance... on the Forum Home, click the "Statistics - Top 15" and it'll take you to the extended page that lists top 30. Out of those top 30 newest members, there's 8 of them that haven't even accepted the email that was sent to them with a link to activate their account.- Brian Meissen

I know I haven't been active lately, but haven't had a bunch of extra time (at one point I was on message boards for 8 hours and my wife was getting upset)

With over a thousand posts, Steve, you have nothing to worry about.
People that I know just don't have as much time and I know personally I edited their information so they wouldn't be purged. SLPDave, for instance, fell into the purge list, and I edited his profile to say he last visited in January. Same with a few other guys. If someone *WAS* active enough at some point that I recognize their username from the list, I'm not going to delete them from the site just because they take a leave of absence. It's the ones that registered and then never posted, and haven't visited in forever and a half that get removed.

I can understand, I'm on and off all day at work, then a couple hours at home, my wife to be gets a little tweaked sometimes. Suffice to say this has taken the place of my chat habit I used to have. lol.Originally posted by archemedesI know I haven't been active lately, but haven't had a bunch of extra time (at one point I was on message boards for 8 hours and my wife was getting upset)
