The 3.4L block is actually a very good block to use for modding. The problem is that it's highly suffocated by the intake plenum and the heads. 3.1L heads (which can directly bolt onto the 3.4L) actually flow better than a fully port and polished set of 3.4L heads. The problem with bolting the better flowing 3.1L aluminum heads to our 3.4L is that it changes the compression ratio so high that you'd have to change the pistons. But, theoretically, you can change out these parts and replace with factory GM parts (you can find used factory parts cheap, is the point in that) and just doing the different heads, using a 3.1L intake plenum, and changing the pistons, you'll be at z28 power from the same year. Add in a cam, forced induction, nitrous... well, you got yourself a very powerful V6.

As impressive as it might be to have such a fast V6 like has been said it'll be highly unreliable and probably end up costing just as much if not more than a LT1 or LS1. If however you do want to stick with the 6 I'd say look for a nice GTP motor that is already forged and boost the hell out of it.Doing less with more

Just for the record, no one has ever blownup a 3.4L block. Ever. Unreliable? Maybe certain parts break, but you'll never have a problem with the block.- Brian Meissen

brian that buildup would be sweet if you permanently welded the heads to the block lol. its the head gaskets that always fail. what kind of compression you talking btw?-Joel

well i own a 3.4 and i am going to be selling it, probably middle of summer and getting a 98+, z28 or ss because i cant stand the 3.4 anymore, its not a bad motor its just theres hardly anything that you can do to it to get a big increase in power, except of corse forced induction but that is one polished up penney. if anything i think you should get a 3.8, or if your lucky a gtp motor (like d mucle said), witch is a 3.8 but its supercharged and i think it has a couple other goodies.
please excuse my spelling... i went to a cathlic school.

If you don't change the pistons, the compression is 14.5:1, with changing the pistons I don't remember what the compression ratio comes to but it's in safe limits.- Brian Meissen

Thanks for some more info. I guess forced induction just seems more economical because you can upgrade one thing at a time instead of dumping a bunch of money up front. I've already replaced some of the gaskets/seals and the oil sensor because I could see them getting older and heard of some of the issues from the chevy dealership (before they told me how much it'd cost to fix and I'll never go back there again), but really, for being 10 years old and not having a single real issue, I'd say it's pretty reliable. The engine is in excellent shape, probably because the previous owner was a lady in her 40's who "got too old to drive it." I was also thinking of upgrading my transmission, which is currently automatic. I have seen some conversions but they must be a nightmare to do. I'll be keeping up with the other threads and asking for opinions and stuff more later on.

Phil take it from a nother 3.4 guy, go with the LT1/LS1 swap. It's pointless to try with the 3.4L no aftermarket for it, and you're not going to get alot of power out of it. Now if you had a 3.8L 3800 Series II then I'll tell you to mod your life away, N/A 3.8s are running 11s in a quarter just ask the GP guys, and the supercharged ones remove the supercharger for a turbo and running 10s. Or you can get a LT1 that will swap in easier than a LS1 or get the LS1 because if you are modding it like you say you are the LS1 will give you more power in the end. Just my 20 cents.
