  • New from Grand Rapids - 2000 T/A WS6 M6

I'm a die hard GM guy. It's what I grew up with, what I'm familiar with, and what I'm comfortable with.

I've always been partial to '69 Camaros, but I've been leaning toward '70-'73 RS Camaros more recently, and that's what I *was* looking for. Priorities meant putting this off, but just as I started looking at cars, I realized we may finally have the means to get into a new house. However, I had the bug bad, and started looking again a few months later.

That's when I came across this 2000 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am WS6 6-speed. This was my top choice of any later model vehicle I can think of. I knew I could find one more easily, it would be easier to find with a manual, that it would be relatively inexpensive, and would have the benefits of a late model car. It may put off buying a house a year, but my wife agreed that I had waited long enough.

It had under 54,500 miles on it when I picked it up just a few weeks ago, and has never seen winter. It was brought up from VA 3 years ago, then stored in a heated warehouse during MI winters. Other than some chips on the front bumper, and some minor scratches on the driver's rear quarter, it's very clean. No tears or cracks in the leather. There's on small crack in the passenger side door panel, and the driver's side seat belt guide was broken, but that's it. It's also mostly original, with just Borla catback exhaust, ZR1 wheels, and an old Sony headunit (OE headunit was included.) I've had a few minor issues that cropped up within 36 hours (headlight motor and headlight connection, a power window motor, and trunk latch), but I have that all sorted out. I also remounted the single DIN radio with a double DIN kit, with a pocket. It looks a lot cleaner, and opens up options for upgrades later. And I managed to replace the PCV valve without breaking the ridiculous apparatus GM used. Hopefully I'll get around to changing out fluids when we get a solid run of warm weather.

Congrats on the car and welcome to the site! Make sure you fix that door panel before it gets worse, and the other one before it cracks! If you haven't seen this http://ls1tech.com/forums/appearance...or-panels.html -you should do it before it gets worse, and before the other one starts to crack.

          Thanks everybody.

The actual process of buying the car was a bit of an adventure. We timed my second visit just right to fit a test drive in. We had a little trouble at his bank, but worked that out. Then we drew #47 at the SOS, and they were serving #13. By the time we got back to the car, the sun was starting to set, and the wind storm rolled in. That made loading it on the trailer a joy. Because of the wind, I basically took Grand River Ave all the way from Grand Ledge to Grand Rapids, and I swear 30% of that was continuous filled in potholes. The whole rig handled the bumps just fine, but once the sun set, it became visually exhausting.

We took the car to Ann Arbor the next day, to visit my wife's aunt, and see some friends. On the way back, we ended up back in Grand Ledge to see more friends (best friend and his family), right in the same area the car came from. Turns out, it was the same car we had seen in the past.

And that leads to the one down side. My wife is happy to be the DD, but won't drive the T/A. I have to choose between a DD with a minivan and the T/A whenever we go out. Tough, right? (She doesn't like driving my truck either)

I work downtown, so I've been fairly well behaved. It had 35% tint on the side windows, but I reluctantly took that off on Saturday. I felt it was necessary to be less of a target, and I'll be daily driving it outside of the winter months. I'll be 40 in June, with an excellent driving record, but that's one less thing to apologize for in the event I do encounter a cop.

I do plan to work on the door panels, but I hadn't come across the write-up. Thanks!

Thanks! I'm technically in Walker, near the Alpine Meijer. We're in an old, quiet neighborhood, but there's been a lot of turn over since we moved here. Not enough space either! I'm hoping to find a house with at least a 1/2 acre lot and a 3rd stall, if not a separate shop... Tough to find in the area we're looking, especially in our price range.

I'm from West Olive, just a half hour due west. Lets go for a cruise when the weather turns!

I know West Olive reasonably well! I grew up in Fruitport, and seems like we always knew somebody that lived out there. Somewhere around 2002, my best friend and his wife lived in a rental on Lake Michigan for the off season. In the spring, with moving day coming up, we had a huge party right on the beach. We drained a 1/2 barrel of Oberon, and a ton of booze, that night. And probably the biggest bonfire I've ever seen. The property care taker joined us, and provided a tree. Nothing crazy though... just a great night, chilling on the beach.

It's too bad Grand Haven put a stop of cruising.

The WS6 rolled 60,000 miles recently. I finally got around to some maintenance on it. Flushed the power steering fluid. I replaced the brake fluid in the master, but ran out of time to flush out the lines.

I finally took the time to find a noise that I suspected was an idler pulley. Found that pretty quick with a stethoscope. I cleaned it up, and it seemed to spin pretty well. Packed it with grease, reinstalled, and some noise came back after a few minutes. Ended up putting on a new one. Noise gone.

I believe I spotted a leak somewhere on the steering rack. Fluid in the reservoir was low, so I guess I'll be investigating that further.

It's had a mild surge when coasting at light throttle at 1,500 RPM in 2nd gear... sometimes a little noticeable in 3rd. I found that the oval, rubber inlet between the airbox and the resonator had partially detached from the airbox. I reseated the rubber, but I have a feeling I should glue that in place. I have a feeling the MAF got dirty or damaged as a result. At a glance it looks OK, but I had already decided to put the GPM MAF that came on the car back on. I was honestly starting to wonder if I bent a push rod with one of my missed shifts, or fouled the plugs when I fogged it with Seafoam, but it's back to normal again.

I was going to change the transmission fluid, but didn't find any brand name Dexron III or anything that seemed T56 safe, other than maybe Mobile 1 ATF.

FWIW, my son needed to do some work for a Scout badge, and while changing the oil on our POS 2009 Grand Caravan, I spotted what looks like an intake coolant leak. I despise that vehicle, particularly that 3.3L.

I'm not even sure why they still offered that 3.3L into the RT minivan. My dad's RS was lucky enough to have the 3.8L. I had to change the alternator on that, it wasn't too bad - except trying to get the belt off was nearly a nightmare.

I'm planning on changing the fluid in my T56 with AC Delco P/N 10-4033. I haven't had great luck with synthetics in T56s and they're a bad idea if the trans is stock. My MGW shifter is suppose to arrive this week and I'll change the fluid at the same time. I got the fluid off Amazon, ~$11/quart. Pricey, but it's the specified fluid. Maybe any dex III will work in theory, but a few bucks more isn't a big deal IMO for the factory stuff.
