              3. No C.A.R.B. regulations (Long Tubes & Cam here I come!)
              4. So I'd be able to properly pronounce these darned Michigan cities (Muskegon = Muss-Kee-Gan, not Musk-Ka-Gone & Charlotte = Shar-Lot, not Shar-Let )
              5. New house in Michigan = $195,000, New house in California = $550,000 + your soul and first born child
              6. So I could annoy all the locals by calling pop, "Soda"
              7. 70 MPH speed limits on the interstate
Oh, I figured this one out at the gas statin today:
              8. High octane fuel = 93, it's only 91 in CA

Reason I moved from SoCal: clean, breathable air. Clean, drinkable water. Eathquakes are rare, and we're in little danger of sliding into the nearest ocean. I like snow, and cool weather - should be here in a month or two.
Reasons I miss SoCal: bodysurfing. Hot chix in bun-floss bikinis. Fave restaurants like Carl's Jr, Beef Bowl, El Pollo Loco, Naugles, plus great non-chains. The cops can't just radar gun you on the highway, they have to pace you.

What part of the nutty state were you in?

NorCal . . . about 30 minutes southwest of Sacramento (about 50 minutes northeast of SF) . . . Yeah, I miss the food more than anything so far . . . I've been here for almost a year . . . I'm going back for X-mas this year and I've made a list of places I need to eat (i.e. In-N-Out, local Japanese place, real Chinese food, real Mexican food).
I also miss the speed laws in CA . . . I'm still certified for RADAR opperation in California and got to learn all the in's & out's of the tricks of the trade. I'm 2 for 3 on wiggling free on speeding tickets (the one loss I couldn't rationalize - 97 in a 65 ) . . .
Anyhow, I'd rather go through an earthquake any day of the week than to have to go through a tornado or a blizzard . . . I like snow, too; though back home it was only an hour-and-a-half drive up into the Sierras and I didn't actually have to live in it either.
Have you been Michiganized yet (i.e. do you have funny names for soda . . . like "pop"?)
And another thing . . . the water here in Kalamazoo doesn't taste good :thumbsdo:. It's got so many minerals in it I'm suprised you don't have to chew the water here.

minerals in the water and the food and the verbage... my advice is, don't fight it, let it happen. I used to be accustomed to well water... now that's probably something you've never had before. I used to live in Louisiana, so I know all about ordering different kinds of Coke! lol The food is tough, because when i go to Washington DC or any major city, I enjoy eating authentic Thai, etc, and Michigan doesn't have MUCH of that...

I'm actually used to well water, 80% of the municipal water came from city owned wells back home, there just wasn't the amount of iron and other bad things that I'm getting here.

The biggest change for me will be several months of SS inactivity and having to drive my fiancee's 99 Malibu . . . though one good thing, I work so close to home the insurance on the SS is considered recreational. Went from $160 a month to less than $100/month . . . gotta love that!

Now I've just got to find a track around here . . . I'm so used to Infineon, I'm kind of scared to see what the local tracks here look like.

unfortunately michigan has lost a large number of dragstrips over the years due to noise complaints and property value.

                              Blizzard: what of it?
To make you more at ease regarding tornados: find the lowest, most sequestered part of your basement, or where your water/sewer mains enter your basement. If in an apartment, this is probalbly your underground parking gargare or storage lockers. Let the whole family know where this is and how to get there, even in the dark (have flashlight near your bedrooms), and have ready any keys that would be needed to access that spot. The more concrete walls, the better. Living in hills/valleys is better, disrupts the "funnel". Even if you chose to sweat it out, knowing these details in advance can save you peace of mind, and perhaps your lives. I've lived through a tornado (200 feet from our house) and a Downburst (in the middle of it's 10 mile wide path).
I thought hard water was better for you - didn't you know iron is part of your USRDA? I don't know about Kazxoo water, sorry.
I'm originally from WI, so coming back was more like an escape from looney land - but you're from the sane corner of that state. So I knew what a bubbler was, but when I was in Tenn, and would get friends a "Coke" that they asked for, they'd get upset when I brought them a Coke instead of the Root Beer they wanted.... In SoCal, nobody knew what a blinker was or what they were on the vehicle for anyhow, SoCal drivers were untrainable. My fave bumper sticker was always placed over dents on cars: "You don't need to tell us you are a California native, we can tell by the way you drive."
In SoCal snow was referred to by the Feet - how many feet of elevation the snow cover had come down the mountains. Here the feet is how much accumulation since the last time it melted, or else it's measured by months. Up here in da yoopee there is a sign at the site of record snowfall - 394 inches of snow one year, IIRC
If you have not yet seen "Fargo" and "Escanaba in da moonlight" yet, see them, and revel in them. And in case you bump into Canadians, like the Governor of MI, see Canadian Bacon also - consider it training video.
