  • 79 bird ls1 swap--noob

Hello everyone, thanks for having me. I'm working on a 79 firebird, I want to put an Ls1 into it. Any tips that anyone has would be very helpful.

      Welcome!

I'm sure it's been done before, but don't personally know what it takes. Definitely motor mounts lol. What transmission are you going with? Also there are lots of LS_ platform engines out there, bigger and smaller displacements, aluminum and iron, lots to chose from if you're not dead set on the LS1.

Post some pics of your project!

LIke Fred said, it's been done before, but I just don't have any personal knowledge of the process. I would either keep this thread towards the top of the stack for a a few days, by posting reminders that you are til looking for information, or I would try Googling it and see what comes up.

Good luck and welcome to MiFBody!

It's not that bad! Actually it is quite fun and rewarding.

Let me know what is in it now as far as engine/trans and what transmission you plan on going with.

My current swap is a hybrid setup in a 1960 Impala. 5.3L LM7 with LS1 intake, L99 power steering pump, LS1 alternator bracket (not in picture, L99 bracket shown), stock truck water pump, LS1 oil pan. Holley A/C bracket will be added soon.

Its not hard but your smart to investigate what you are getting into. You can pick up a engine complete from $500+ and up but most LS1- will be $1500-3000. However there is more to it than just buying an engine.
-like Fred said motor mount adapter plates
-High pressure fuel lines, it is recommended to have a baffled fuel tank
-with a T56 will need to modify tail shaft or but an box to convert the speedometer if your using the stock gauge and you have to mount the hydraulic master cylinder.
-Exhaust will you use manifold or headers
-Cooling system- electric cooling fans would be best
            -adapters for PS system
            -shorten driveshaft
            -throttle cable/drive by wire
-vehicle will be slightly higher in front because it will be ~100 lbs less

I have a 1999 LS1/T56 with wiring and computer for sale if you are interested.

Welcome. My son has a 1979 Camaro with a LS6 454 and would love to sell that engine for an LS based engine with a 6 speed. They fit fine in a second gen.
