  • Formula 350 T-Top Muskegon Area

Hi! My name is Jake Portenga and I'm an Eagle Scout from Troop 14 in Spring Lake. I currently attend Muskegon Community College for Auto Tech and love working on cars.

My first car was a teal 1991 RS with a 305 TBI. It was a bit of a basket case but it was fun to drive and it taught me a lot about cars. It also made me realize that I love F-Body cars and working on cars full time. A week before I graduated from high school, I sold the RS and bought a red 1989 T-Top Formula Firebird. It was originally a Texas car and had no Michigan winter on it as far as anyone could tell. It needed an engine so I dropped a 5.7 TPI out of a 1991 Z-28 into it and because the previous owner had driven it with a broken TV cable, I had to replace the trans, too (good thing I got a deal on the car & engine!)

Now, I've got it road-ready and plan to take it to the Meet and Greet. Stop by and see me - I need some advice on what to do to it next. I know it needs paint (the clear is peeling). I'm looking for ideas on upgrades that give me the best bang for my buck. Just keep in mind that I'm a college student on a shoe-string budget!

If you live in West Michigan or are ever in the area, give me a shout!

Welcome to MiFBody, Jake! Lots of sources for 3rd Gen info here, and lots of Firebird fans here too! Scott (92conv) will chime in here shortly, and he would be glad to give you some information about the West Michigan Firebird Club.
