  • Glad I found you guys! New member

Have had thoughts for some time about buying a 1998-2002 Camaro to play with. I always liked these years and am currently searching for a roller or a V-6 that needs engine work or has a popped engine. My plan is find something not thrashed and put a 6.2L in it and let it eat. I like hard tops so that is what I am currently looking for. Like plain jane cars, no power anything, crank windows and no power locks. I just like them that way. I do not have a lot of experience with EFI and OBDII, but I know a little and have some good resources to draw off of. If you know of any good 1998-2002 Camaro's available, let me know. I thought i had one yesterday and missed it by 15 minutes. I look forward to finding my car and doing some late nights in the shop.

    Welcome to the site!

I would suggest starting out a Z28 to begin with. These cars are not as simple as your 78 malibu. There are so many differences from V6 to V8. Radiator, K-member, wiring harness, rack and pinion, etc

      Welcome to MiFBody!

I agree with Bri2203 -- it's one of the things that stops me in my tracks when I consider swaping out my V6 for an LS1. Lots of guys have done it, for sure, but it hasn't been very cost-effective.

Most Z28s and even most V6 cars will have power locks and power windows, but it's easy to decontent your car if you want to go the full-manual route.

Not many 4th Gen cars without power everything. Good luck with the search. My 35th Anniversary Brickyard 400 Camaro SS is for sale but it is fully loaded.

Welcome, Steve, and enjoy the site!

Your quest to find a 4th gen without any power options is going to be a difficult and possibly expensive one. Like what a couple of guys have said before, you can find a "stripper" V6 that will be missing the power options you mentioned, but the cost to bring it up to the requirements for the V8 conversion will turn it into a non-recoverable money pit (enter Meissen ). That aside, it's going to be challenging to find a Z28 without power options as, while they were technically "options", 99%+ of Z28s made came with those options. So today, they are pretty rare and coveted cars. And when you do find one, it's likely been ordered with the 1LE option, which was used for GMs loophole for SCCA road racing cars (Z28s, Formulas, and Trans Ams).

To give you an idea of how rare these are, they made 99 1LE Z28s in 1998....and '98 was the highest 1LE production year for 4th gens...

I'd recommend living with a couple of creature comforts in a Z28......

Find a V6 car that has 'em and just swap...that could be a viable option...console could come across as well...

You were in so deep to begin with, the V8 swap was just a "Eh, might as well..."
