Nope, his is an '80...made a lot of those...5700 to be exact...OK, that's really not a lot...lol...

Only 2000 '81s...just as neglected, so a bit harder to find...

I have only seen another two of them in real life (not counting this one, if it's the one I think it is)...one was at the St. Ignace show, some 15 years ago, totally butchered up...and the other was, of all places, cruising down Bourbon Street in N'Awlins, jacked up in the back, with chrome Cragers on and four kids in it, some 20 years ago...

true true, there are still more of the 80 indy pace cars around. right here there is 3 besides mine, 2 sinking and one the guy wont drive because its not fast enough and found out about anothere 80 pace car in marlett. heard its bad rusted out and the guy wants 19,000 for it, my friend busted out laughing.

Thanks guys. The 81 is pretty solid although it is showing it's age. I bought it in 1987 but never had the original wheels for it. The rest is 100% stock except I lost the cold air duct to the carb hat, and of course it has an aftermarket CD player. Most of the mechanicals are pretty shot after sitting in my garage for 12 years and my moms backyard 8 years before that. Amazingly, it still starts and drives. That 301 is weak but it has never failed to start if you pour enough gas in.

Eventually I might refurb the 301, but I just can't justify spending $5000 to rebuild a 200 HP turbo motor right now. It will be a stock LS1 with a 4L80 all running off an aftermarket controller - I have a 3600 stall for it too, so it should be a blast to drive. We are going to have to replace the entire suspension, fuel system, and a bunch of the electrical. Except for the trans crossmember, the whole LS1 swap is a bolt in including off the shelf Edelbrock headers.

So hopefully it will be on the streets by fall or next spring at the latest!
