  • Greetings from HIMIPoncho!

Hi everyone! My name is Kyle and I'm from Reed City, MI. I currently own a 1987 Pontiac Firebird and a 1971 Pontiac Firebird. The '87 has 458,000mi and has been my daily driver since I bought it new in July 1987. The car is in great shape by any standards. Especially for seeing 20 Michigan winters! The '71 I just recently picked up as a future project. Money is tight at the moment but I just couldn't pass up the deal. I hope to make a "Protouring" car out of it. I have most of the stuff for the drivetrain but I can't afford body work just yet.

I was referred to this site by Tom aka ITSSLOW. I met him at the Pennzoil in Big Rapids where I have been taking my car since it has been new. Feel free to ask me any questions.

I hope to have pictures up by this weekend. Tom needs to snap some pictures for me so I can post them!

    Kyle

          Hey Kyle,

Since you said to feel free to ask questions -- what all have you done to make the car survive that many miles? Tom said the trans and engine were original, have they been rebuilt at all? I'm just absolutely amazed at how many miles are on the car. I believe it, no doubt, just amazed.

The engine is basically original besides basic tune ups and a few fixes. I've had the heads redone twice, replaced the exhaust manifolds at 350k, and replaced the timing chain and rear main seal a few times.

The trans is completely stock! I've been super anal about the service on it and had Tom's work change the transmission fluid every 50,000mi since new. The clutch has been replaced a few times. The first time around I put in an AC Delco unit but I put this last clutch in about 100k ago and put in something aftermarket. Although the brand name escapes me at the moment.

The suspension and steering has been rebuild just like you'd think with this many miles. I've put ball joints, tie rods, sway bars, etc but the true hard parts have remained stock.

I'm on about my fifth set of brakes on the car. Stock replacement stuff. Nothing fancy like drilled/slotted rotors or nice pads.

The interior is 100% original except for a CD player I broke down and installed and seats from a 1997 Camaro Z28.

I bought the car when I was 17 and about 350,000 of those 458,000 are highway miles. I couldn't ask for more with this car. I'll never sell it but once I hit half a million I'm parking it out in the pole barn for a while. I think after 500,000mi she deserves a rest. Hopefully at that point I will have the '71 on the road and can start restoring this one.

Oh, the most amazing part about the car is that the rear end is ORIGINAL! Sure the fluid has been changed several times and I have an aftermarket differental cover but besides that it is original. That's including seals and bearings!

Welcome to the site Kyle! I'm from Reed City also. Currently I'm in Chicago because of school but when I graduate next year I'll be moving back to upper Michigan. I never realized how beautiful it was until I started living in this concrete jungle.
