  • 3rd gen exhaust question

Hey I got a question for anyone with a high power third gen. What have you guys done for exhaust? I want ground clearance (Im building a street/strip car) but I dont wanna spend a fortune. I just finished my 383 and I was planning on a set of hooker comp long tube headers but what do I do for mufflers etc? The motor should be well over 450hp and its got a 150-250 adj shot of n2o so it needs to breathe big. Anybody got any ideas? Anybody know what works on these cars? I thought about mufflex 4in but that seems kinda pricey after the system at 600-700 and 300 for a y pipe plus cost of headers and not to mention shiping it all. ANY HELP WOULD BE GREAT

    THANKS

I have seen a lot of people do the duals down the sides of the car and dump before the tire. They usually use a bullet muffler. Ask shawn hes gotta 383 and he did that. I think it sounds awesome.

And another thing.....when I gun the motor, I want the whole world to think it's coming to an end.

i have the same setup a 383 with a 125 wet shot no2 i started out running 2 1/2 inch headers into true duals out the back just finnished changing it to dual 3 inch all the way back which really wasnt needed just nice for sound... if you get a decent dual kit they dont get in the way to bad for clearance... i mean you cant ground the car but easy 1 inch drop maybe 1 1/2 all around without hitting anything... i tryed doing a vette style side pipe setup but really its alot of drilling through the fenders and unibody... and im not sure how safe that would be.. but as long as you dont mind a little rattle which you will probably get with that kinda motor anyways i pretty much have the exhaust right up touching the underbody besides maybe 1/2 and inch for spacers and heat shields... cant even tell its true dual anymore unless you look under it.. before it hung down like most of them do... and if your willing to pay the bucks for custom bent pipe you can fit dual 2 1/2 oval pipe in the center channel... but its pricey looking at like 350 just for the pipes bent and installed...

Well if you want ground clearance dont go with dual 3 inch exhaust, its pretty big and you absolutely dont need that big of pipe on a small block. I beat the hell outta my exhuast this summer cuz the roads are so rough. If you want duals just shoot for a 2.5....I would spend some money here cuz you want that exhaust tucked up nice. Heres mine:

I'm doing the Supercomp long tube exhaust this winter for my 385, actually. Extensive discussions with Thunder Racing got me convinced that you can be just fine with the Hooker cat-back, a three-inch mandrel bent single exhaust. The kicker is in the Y-pipe. You will have troubles getting past your transmission crossmember and torque arm.

In order to maximize clearance, I went with a short torque arm that ends halfway up the transmission tunnel. I'm also fabbing us a custom trans crossmember that will let me run a 2 3/4 (or 2 1/2) custom Y-pipe into the cat-back setup.

As for air flow, Thunder Racing says that the Hooker Aerochamber is besting anything else they try on their dyno as far as mufflers go. The sweet setup though is to take a Hooker single in/single out, and mate it to the Mufflex 3.5 inch cat-back tube. Too bad Mufflex doesnt sell their tubes without a muffler! I'll be re-using my Aerochamber crossflow muffler since it's obviously not much of a restriction: I made 400 RWHP at 6250 RPM through it, even with the little 1 5/8 primaries of the cheap Edelbrock TES headers.

So I suggest you save some dough, call Thunder Racing and order yourself a Hooker cat-back for third-gens. It works and sounds great. Just be sure to ditch the stupid ricer quad tips they send with it and put on some regular 18 inch chrome slash tips.
1984 Pontiac Trans Am. Well, most of it anyway. Some of it is 1969 Chevy. Some of it is 1982 4-cylinder Firebird, 1987 Trans Am, and 1991 Formula 1LE. Some of it is 1994 Trans Am, and some of it is 1999 SLP Firehawk. The rest is aftermarket.

            my 2 1/2

this is the old exhaust its a hooker kit we just welded the clamps side by side together all the way back the first pic is right under the passenger side... its sitting a little lower than normal cause the motor wasnt in it at the time... the second pic is the underbody you can see its tight right to it... really with ground effects and what not i didnt loose any clearance there... and the last pic is the mufflers which is the only part i didnt like and im changing this winter.. they run one over top the other and kinda rattle at mid to high rpm... im trying to find a decent sized muffler that will fit in the space between the wheel well and the trunk shouldnt be to big of a deal just a flipped standard oval muffler would work i think.

Hey guys thanks for all the advice/pics. Just to clarify Im not flat broke, I just cant justify spending about $1000 for the mufflex 4" exhaust set up. I was looking for something better than the typical firebird exhaust single pipe setup but I wasnt sure how well peoples dual 3s worked out for them. Thanks for the help though & hopefully Ill have it up and running again for spring, Assuming the 10 bolt holds out for a little while longer...

HAHA that was you? I was turning around to get to my buddies...I believe my trans was slipping pretty bad that nite as well, due to like 2 qts low on trans fluid. If you would like to have a race..please call me out this next spring! I'll show you slow turd gen.
