I have an 89 tpi motor. is this a roller camshaft? do i need a specific intake to convert to a carb?

Yes it's a roller motor and don't switch to a carb.

3rd that. Tuned port can make great power and better mileage than a carbed vehicle.

A standard gen 1 small block intake will fit, but the 87 and newer heads have 4 bolt holes in the center of the intake that are at a different angle than the rest. I'm not sure if anyone makes a special carburated intake for those heads but i'm sure you can come up with an angled spacer to allow you to use a standard intake. You might also have to do a little grinding on the center holes to allow the bolt to pitch at that different angle.
As far as carb vs. Tpi goes, they both have their advantages and a correctly tuned carb can deliver excellent fuel mileage. I'm not saying that it will be better than tpi, but you can get pretty darn close.
