3rd Gen Vert Questions

Doing some research for my dad. He was offered this in on trade for something and is looking for some input.
I don't know much about the 3rd gens so hopefully you guys can help us out!

He is saying these do not come available as convertible's and this was was converted to the vert. Dad is wondering if being converted into a convertible if there is any obvious problems with vert 3rd gens such as structural integrity or anything else?

We are also curious as to what you guys think a realistic value on this car is?

87+ were offered by GM, but were done by an outside company called ASC (American Sunroof Company)

Verts have added bracing done by ASC, sometimes the work looks pretty sloppy. SFC's really make a difference on these cars. Drains in the rear quarters can get plugged which caused water to flow into the rear seat buckets and foot rest area.

I don't like the fact that it doesn't have the original engine, and it actually hurts the value IMO. I would have liked to see the original 305 TPI LB9. Top looks to be the wrong material top (vinyl instead of stayfast canvas) and the rear bumper has been resprayed by the looks of it. Values are going up for verts and he might be in the ball park...I just don't like some of the things I see for it being a low mileage/higher priced example

Agreeing with what Michael said, especially on the engine.

To me personally, the original 35k miles is slaughtered by not having the original engine, radio, and other odds and ends. A vehicle of that low miles is the most valuable when nothing has been touched. I think a more reasonable price would be 7-8k.

I have never seen an IROC with 15" wheels but some say that was the standard wheels with the package.

Spark plug wire routing sucks

Looks like a nice car, but I think the color hurts the value as well. It is hard to sell a maroon car. I would say it is worth $7-8,000.

I'm guessing its only a picture of the headers because they already figured out they wont fit on the car.


16" rims where standard on on the IROC for 1985-1987. That changed in 1988. Years 1988 - 1990 the Standard was the 15 X 7" Cast-Aluminum rims. These rims were now painted in all silver or all gold (No more colored recessed parts only). These 16" rims became now an option however now were restyled with 2 thin lines through the spoke where there used to be only 1 thick line. This would be the same for years 1988 - 1990. The verts are nice, I'd love to have one! This guy is asking about 4 grand too much for this car. Verts are rare in theory, but not scarce. You can find them all day in nice shape for half of his asking price. I'd call it rare if it were a 5 speed.. I completely agree that for this to have any value, it would have to be pristine and original. This car is a respectable driver that needs some work IMO (remove hitch, paint for nose, wheels are atrocious)

If he wants into the third gen game, he can get much more for less.

I believe that most "official" vert conversions had a plate on the driver side door jam with a little added info.

I agree with everyone above on the engine and that it's overpriced.. I would see if the original engine is laying around somewhere too haha!

still appears to be a nice car.. he even offers to throw in the stock radio.. so thats a plus.
