  • Rear end noise?

I'm hearing a strange howling coming from my differential, sounds like the passenger side. A wheel bearing maybe? When I bought the car in March the noise was there but it was pretty quiet. I thought it was the rear tires. Now it is getting louder. At higher speed I'm hearing it less. I have never had a wheel bearing go on me, not sure what it would sound like. Any idea what it would cost and how involved it would be to replace? Thanks!

Cost - not that much. Labor - not too bad with the right tools.

Pull the diff cover, remove the center pin and the c clip. Pull the brakes off (not sure if you have disc or drums) and check the axle for a wear groove. If you can catch you finger nail on it then it's time for a new axle and bearing, see if your local AZ has a puller which will save some headache

Drum brakes. So its an axle bearing and not a wheel bearing? Thanks man. The car is my daily driver right now, hopefully we can get this resolved asap.

So it turns out every seal in my rear end was leaking. Lots of metal shavings everywhere! So much for a quick easy fix. All of the parts are washed, new bearings, seals, wheels cylinders, brakes, and ups delivered my 373 gear set yesterday. Going from a 273 to a 373 should be a fun change! I'm super bummed that we couldn't make the Dream Cruise. When I bought the car back in March, Power Tour and The Dream Cruise were the two I wanted to go to most. We didn't make either. I knew when I bought the car that I was going to have to go through a lot of it. Its a straight clean garage kept car, but the previous owner never kept up on anything except oil changes. My wallet hurts!!!

Axles weren't bad at all. It looks like the carrier bearing was the one making all of the noise. It was only a matter of time before it left me stranded somewhere. Like I said every seal in the thing was leaking.

If you have never had ur diff open before the metal shavings is normal unless one of your spiders or other geard were really worn down

That was the first time I ever had one apart. Finally drove it home tonight. The car ran great and the new 373 gear is fun!
