  • Rearend Swap or Gear Swap

I am looking for suggestions and input for my 1992 Camaro Z28 - 305 TPI Auto. I am looking at upgrading to a 3.23 or 3.42 gear. Has the 2.73s I believe would have to verify... anywho looking to upgrade.

I know the 4th gen is a straight bolt in but it is 2" wider each side. What is required for the disc brakes to function properly if installing a 4th gen rear end? Was told there was some modding for them? Does anyone have a picture of a 3rd Gen w/ a 4th Gen rear end on Factory Wheels? Curious how it looks??

    or

Im really thinking about swapping the gears on my 3rd gen rear end. If I go this route what brand of gear would you recommend? And what should I expect price wise to do this?

Anyone in the Southwest Michigan area you would recommend for doing either one for me? Limited on time and effort on doing it!

93-97 should bolt right up, just need to use 91-92 rear e-brake cables if you're switching from drum. 98-02 rears have a better e-brake setup, but you need to order the special cables which are available from www.flynbye.com (don't think the stock 98-02 cables work, could be wrong though)

I'd just swap gears. Find yourself a set of GM gears and go. I might even have a 3:42 sear set laying around, I'll take a look.
I do have a 3rd gen rear axle housing (just housing) set up for LS1 brakes and welded relocation brackets if your interested....it's free if you come pick it up.

Ok Ive been doing some more reading now if I pick up a set of gears for this 3rd gen rear end - Ive read that for the 3rd gens we need to upgrade to a to a series 3 Carrier or use a thicker gear set?

The more I look into it its something I don't want to attempt myself and will probably have a shop do it...

Anyone have parts list on what I would all need? So I can have the parts available....

you can either use the thicker ring gear or replace the posi unit with a 3 series. If you're looking for a nice, quiet rear without whining, go with American Axle mfg they were the factory supplier. Aftermarket gears are a little different and getting some that don't whine is hit and miss. If you go with the thicker gear you have to go with an aftermarket gear.

If your going to do all this work make sure you upgrade to POSI and no less then 3.73 gears.
