  • fuel injection to carb motor

i have a 1985 camaro with 350 tpi, and have a 383 stroker carburated that i want to transfer into the 1985. what must b done to go from fuel injected to carb'd? fuel pump left in tank or pull it out of tank?

  • #2
theres about a million threads on it on thirdgen.org. look it up there because i think youll have to switch computers also. or just put some sort of tpi setup back on the 383

yeah, we planned on pullin/swapping computers, just wasnt sure on the fuel pump needing takin out of tank and what not. ive heard people putting fuel pressure regulators on but the friends car im helping with doesnt want to do it that way.

the tpi units fuel pump has more pressure which is needed for fuel injection. a carb needs less pressure than fuel injection so i guess one one of doing it would be putting a regulator in it. also i think you can hook everything up with your tpi harness but i wouldnt cut wires just tuck them away so they are hidden.

The tpi harness is seperate from the other engine bay harness. Just pull out the computer and tpi harness. And run the stock pump with a regulator.

if your going carb then why even keep a computer? I would rip all that shit out and run bare bones. No need for a computer at all on a carb motor, just food for thought.

If you don't want the pump, you will need to replace the sending unit to an older style pickup, or modify the existing unit.

sounds like a exciting project for the winter along with swapping motors.. do you know if i will need to swap fuel lines as well?

Nope, stock lines will be fine. There should be two lines coming up the driver side frame rail. One is feed, the other is return. I assume the motor is running a mechanical pump so you will need to run a line to the passenger side. I'd most likely run it on the back side of the k member. Cap the return line or remove it all together, I would personally cap in case I wanted to sell the car and the next owner wants to go back to EFI. Keep the original sending unit and box it up. Look for a 82-84 (some 85?) V8 carb sending unit, might be a little harder to find.

Actually, there is one on ebay:

This is simple. VERY!! What Darren and curt said buy a regulator aka a bypass one. I got the quickfuel one and I'm very happy with it.
As far as tpi I goes and computer just unhook it all and remove the harness that goes to the passenger side.

I would pull the motor for this operation it makes it very easy to do when you can sit in the engine bat and seperate wires. The two harness's come together at one point but you'll be able to fish them apart.

I would also run a remote selenoid aka ford style one. Why? Then you can mount it somewhere easily accessible so that the wires that use to run to the starter run to it instead. And you only have to run one wire down to the starter then just make a jumper wire at the starter, so when you want to take the stared off you only have to take one easily accessible wire off from the selenoid and it will be free instead like 3 different wires.

As far as in-tank pump keep it!! Makes it way easier to use. Youll just run a new relay for it.
I'll get you some pics hopefully torrow of something's I'm trying to explain.

I have a very bare bones harness I even removed a shit ton from the interior aswell like rehatch defrost and dumb shit like that. Looks a lot cleaner in my opinion. If I actually get some time I wanna get rid of where the stock harness comes out on the drivers side and move it cus most of the wires go across the engine anyways like only make the wires come out we're I need them like windshield wipers and things like that.

If have ANY questions pm or post here cuz ive done the swap on my 85 so I pretty know how to do it.

If you have the fuel pressure at 5-7 psi you probably won't need a return line but can't hurt to have one to keep the fuel cooler.

wouldn't it hurt the stock in-tank fuel pump being restricted down to 5-7psi?

Yes you WILL want a return otherwise your pump won't last aslong. You NEED a BYPASS regulator they call it.

Here is a link to the one I used. http://www.jegs.com/i/Quick-Fuel/793...oductId=753806

I've used that for a year and not one but of trouble with it. I mounted in on the firewall next to my distributor so it would kinda be hidden. When I get some time I'll post pics of it.

Let me know if you need anything else.
