  • 3rd gen auto shifter removal

My brother's having trouble figuring out how to remove the shift knob. It looks like the same thing as on my '96, but mine has a pin thing that you pull out, but my brother can't seem to find something like that on his. How do you get it off?

It's been a long time, but I believe there is a c-clip down in the top after you pull off the button.

Its like a staple in the front of the shifter (facing towards the a/c controls I think), pull it out. No need to take off the button.

i can take a pic of mine and send it to your phone, but like previously stated by AJ and everyone else, theres a C-clip/Staple looking thing pry it out using a flat head or knife or whatever then she pulls right out.

may i add if you drop your shifter down into 1st you will be able to access it a little easier

My brother's car has the round shifter, I think what you guys are talking about is only for the square-shaped ones. What you were saying is how my 4th gen is.

To the guys who mentioned removing the button, how did you do that? just get under it with a screwdriver or something?

Grab it with a pliers....there is a plastic stem that sticks out the top of the shifter and the button has a metal spring clip that grabs the stem.

All you need to do is open that small circular clip a little and then pull up. The clip should disengage and then you will be able to turn the shifter ball and pull up. It will come out very easily. If you are still having trouble with it, I will post pics later.

the way i removed mine in my 85 was i pushed down twards the shifter base.( i cant remember if there was a clip) and then you'll see a little metal tab just below the shifter button. pull down on it and pull up on the button. and it should all slip off from there. understand though my ball shifter handle had cracks in it. so it could have made it easyer or made it come off in a way it shouldn't have. good luck.
