  • 305 to 400 small block

I need some help. I got a 1989 Camaro RS with the normal 305 in it with the stock 700r4 trans. I was wondering if I did a 400 swap everything would bolt right in without trouble or if I would have to do a whole bunch of swapping and deleting stuff. Would the 400 bolt right up with the trans and everything else?? Some help please????

When the rear end's loose, the car's fast. Loose is fast, and on the edge you're out of control.

    Should be same bolt pattern.
I love 400's. Make that puppy a roller. Or even better make it a 406.

head bolt pattern should be the same too, so all your accessories should work fine.

O.o you can carb any engine but that isn't a traditional small block. LT1 and traditional Chevys sound so sexy. LSx no so much as that traditional sound.

I had a 406 for a few years in my IROC....it's just like any other 2 piece rear main SBC as far as locations go. I'll tell ya though....i don't miss that 406 when compared to the LS1 I have now.

Alright thanks I would love to make it a roller motor. it all depends on the amount of money i can get through this winter. And again about the 406 I wanna do some calling and see how much it would be but Ive always loved 350s but everyones got them nowadays so im gonna go bigger and badder.

Honestly...finding a 5.3 or 5.7 LS motor will be money much more better spent. I had a 406 with all the goodies on it..big cam, AFR heads....and it still wasn't nearly as fun as a high reving motor like an LS1...plus it got HORRIBLE gas milage. 400's can be a little tricky too to keep them cool. They do run hotter than a 350 unless you put a big aluminum rad in with a high flow pump.

Now you see what I've been talking about, people are to stuck on Lsx's. It's god dammed annoying, I don't care if they mod up easier. it's what you want, and what you are going to do.
And old school and Lt1's sound sooo much better then LSx's. Sorry but its true, almost any shop will tell you that
