  • First year of the GTA?

This is what I "know" (please inform me if any of this is incorrect):
    RPO for GTA - Y84
85 was the first year for the wrap around (aero) spoiler as an option and 85 and 86 they were texture black.
    87 First year of GTA
Starting in 87 the wrap around spoiler was standard on the Trans Am and the Formula (which was reintroduce in 87 also) Was the flat wing an option?
GTA and Formulas came standard with the WS6 suspension upgrades and it was optional on the TA

    So my question is this:
Other than the RPO code is there and an easy way to tell if the car is a true GTA?
The problem I have is that the car I'm looking at has had the paint sanded down to redo and all the badges are off.
Any help would be greatly appreciated as I'm going to look at the car tomorrow (3-24)
    Thanks all

From what I have found the GTA option was RPO Y84. I also thought that the TA and GTA starting in 87 came standard with the wrap around "aero" spoiler.
The reason behind this is I'm looking at an 87 GTA and I'm trying to verify that it is actually that. The emblems are all off the car and the spoiler is the standard firebird flat one.
Just a few things I'm trying to figure out. Thanks for your help.

Where are you looking up the codes? I was looking on youngs f-body but they did not list the Y84 as an option for 87...

I belive 1986 was the first year of the wrap around spoiler on T/A's. I parted out a 86 T/A and it had the wrap around spoiler.

This one had the new style front and rear bumper, all the gta badges inside and out, etc. I always thought 87 was the first year, but after that car I wasnt sure, lol. Eric L

1985 was the first year for the wrap around spoiler although it was just and option as the std Trans Am Spoiler was the flat wing.
1987 was the first year for the GTA and it was also the return of the Formula model which hadn't been seen since the end of the 2nd gen cars in 1981.

TA's had the fender vents (behind the front tires), GTA's did not That's another way to sort of tell them apart.

RPO codes and Build sheets are the best and "only" true way. You can take a car and make it look like a GTA

Yeah, I know but I'm not sure the RPO codes are still there so I'm not sure I can verify in that way. So I have to go by what it there and see if everything appears as it should and go from there.
