almost an head will be an improvement over the smog motor of 3rd gens and AFR is one of the best on the market... not sure about the maf i know if you go crazy on the cam you have to change some of the settings in the computer but what size cam are you looking at?

What intake do you have? Id guess that since you have a MAF you have a TPI. If so, the thing holding you back right now is the intake. The TPI intake is designed for a 305 and doesnt flow enough to even feed the stocker heads. Throwing a set of big AFRs on isnt going to net you what your after when your choking the heads with a TPI. Odds are youll lose port velocity from the bigger ports and lose low - mid torque and not gain any top end horsepower.

If you do want to keep the TPI you need heads that are designed for low RPM port velocity (smaller cc runners). You might look at the AFR180's, I think thats what they're called. Just keep the runners <200cc with a TPI. Also, a big cam doesnt work good with a TPI as the intake is dead at about 5,000 RPM. You want a cam made for low to mid range torque.

This is all assuming you have TPI...?

If you really want some big AFR heads then you need to pair them with an appropriate intake that can support them and the cam, namely the Holley Stealth Ram.

As for the MAF, I didnt know they made anything but stock replacements for the TPI setups, I think whoever you heard that from is feeding you a line of bull.

MAF cars are more tollerant to cam changes then SD but not that tollerant. You will have to invest in a chip adapter/flashable PROM chip/ALDL cable/Datalogging software and tune it yourlself.
