Its in the gas tank, so you either need to drop the tank to get to it or do a trap door method. Which involves cutting a hole in the car... Your choice either one is not very hard at all.
I'm not sure if the 3rd gen trap door method is the same as the 4th gen trap door method. You basically just take a cutting wheel to your floor pan right above the gas tank and cut a square out just the right size to get the fuel pump out.
It looks nice. I think the trap door is about the same as 4th gen. I'd go with that and avoid the bolts for taking it out the bottom. I'd even be pressing it thinking that perhaps you could throw an external holley pump on it, using the line feeding to the engine. With 3" exhaust, it may be loud enough to drown out the droning from the pump being mounted to the frame.
The method is the same as a 4th gen but you might wanna look over on TGO to find the exact cutting specs... Like the measurements, I have seen it done on a thirdgen before and I know many guys over on TGO have done it I am sure there is a great write up thread over there. Prolly only a couple hour job.

The only problem with that is that if the in-tank pump is failed adding an external pump in-line doesn't work
Not sure on 4th gens but on 3rd gens if you choose to do the trap door, you have to cut a really large hole because the fuel lines on the top of the tank are steel and run all the way over and down off to the side of the tank.
The trap door method is not a good Idea on a 3rd gen. The whole wooud need to be about 18-24" x about 3 feet to get the sender and fuel lines out.
It took me about 2-1/2 hour to change the pump in my Iroc and I droped the tank. Alot of people say you need to drop the rear to do it but that is a false startment. You need to remove the exhuast, Heat shield, panhard bar and the rigid support bar above it, and the pass side shock and spring. I not really the hard of a job.

I agree with Gary droping the tank is not hard at all, I recently dropped the tank outta my RS to replace it and like Gary said the rear does not have to come out to do so. I had to wiggle mine a little bit but it did drop out...
