  • LT1/700r4 swap into a thirdgen

Hey guys I am thinking about swapping a LT1 and a 700r4 into my thirdgen I can get both the engine and trans at a very reasonable price. So My questions are would this be a easy swap. I will get the engine with the PCM and harness and then a 700r4... If I did this what would be involved (in general terms) and would a LT1 go easily into a thirdgen? I would also be switching from a T5 to a 700r4, whats involved, manual to auto? Just the cross member?

After all said and done would the interior gauges in my car work or would all that need to be changed as well?

hey darren i meant to say something earlier. but i remember doing research before when i was gonna throw my 383 into my 3rd gen theres a guy that you tell him the motor trans and implant car and he makes a harness for what you need. im not sure of his price or name or hell anything. ill go through everything and look and see if i cant find his info anywhere again. but the only problem i think your gonna have with the 700r is gonne be the wiring and shit like that. im not truely sure if thats a big issue or not. ive never mixed 3rd and 4th gen motors and trannys. if you could find one. or get that 4l60e id just do that imho i think itll cost a little more but will be easier on ya. just my two pennies. but if you need anything hit me up. hell i get this v6 and get it runnig right ill come out and help ya on the weekends and shit lol. good luck man.

I would just run a RMVB and not worry about any wiring at all with the transmission and just shift it yourself.

Many 3rd gens came with a 700R4. They quit putting them in fbodies in 1993. If I recall correctly the kickdown cable is different.

But in terms of ease of install, this is a fairly common swap and the LT1 should be OBD1 with a 700R4. You should have plenty of room in that engine bay.

I guess it depends on what year the lt1 is. 93 was a bastard year and is different than the 94, 95-97. I would not swap a 93 into any car. 94 either. with 95 up you have vented opti and obd1.5 for easier tuning. 96,97 has a position sensor and would be easier to eliminate the opti. I suspect if it is a LT1 with 700r is a 93. offer him 100.00 no more than that if he says no walk away. All the issues that Kyle is going through on Reds car is because of it being a 93 and hard to tune. Why go through the swap pain and then have more issues .

It's not a 93 and it's not coming as a package deal I don't remember the year I'll look. I'd be buying a lt1 and then a 700r trans to go behind it or another trans that would work... I just was offered and great deal on a 700r...

EDIT: Its out of a 1996 Caprice with apparently 50,000 Miles on it...

I agree James autos are boring and I hate them but have you seen the prices of T56's these days? Plus I could get this drivetrain for less then $500

Using the quote Mike [mcalus] posted in another thread... Autos win races, manuals impress high school kids.

In all seriousness, with it being a Caprice motor you'll be encountering a few things. I'm sure people on TGO have more experience with it but I know that if you were putting it in a 4th gen I'd be telling you that you'd have to get a 4th gen Camaro accessory bracket for all the accessories. It might fit in a 3rd gen, though, so I'm not sure. '96 motor will be OBD2, will have the vented Optispark as well as the crank position sensor. I'm not sure what all it takes to throw an OBD2 engine into a non OBD2 car.

wiring for the OBD2 port, rest is in the PCM and wire harness. Sounds like a good project. Are you going to build the engine first or just swap it in and get it running.
