i got this tonight for 300$ runs but needs a tune up 1984 firebird 305 with a t-5 i was gonna use it for the trans but i was looking under it and didn't see any rust and the quarters are solid all the rust you see is surface rust

wow not a bad pick up for $300 at all! You could still take the trans out for your other car and turn that one into a drag car

I bet it came with a full tank of gas as well! Where do you find these deals?
I will need a cheap car next fall. Shoot, I just paid 300 for four snow tires.

But seriously, if it were mine, I would NOT touch the exterior, drop in a cammed LS motor and Bam you have a nice sleeper!

I wouldn't personally invest any time in a T-5 they are junk for holding any sort of power above stock.

A 350 tpi will destroy a T5, which is why all the TPI cars got the 700R4. Nice find, would make a nice driver...or you could paint it and sell it to make money for a T56 swap into your Camaro.

This is not totally true... T5's can be built stronger to hold up to a 350 very easily. Actually there is someone on this site I forget their username who actually has some power under the hood and pushing it with a T5 I will look for his thread. I believe he said he takes it to the track as well.

It won't be happening for long, do some research and not just take it from one person or car I assure you they are weak and not worth it.

True they are weak but just like anything else you can make stronger... Not saying it is worth it but I am saying it is possible.

I've heard the GM T5's are weak because of the case...that being said I suppose you could make it stronger by getting an aftermarket case. Apparently the ones on the Mustangs were stronger?

T56=double overdrive=better gas mileage. For some reason people are always surprised when they ask me if it's a five speed and I tell them it's six.
