Ok im sure this has been done but is it really worth the hassle?

I can get my hands on a T56 six speed out of a 1998 Z28 4 th Gen Camaro.. I was thinking about putting it in my car this winter. I have some questions though..
My car is mechanical clutch(82-83) so can i keep my mechanical clutch mechanism?

also will the shifter line up with the hole the colum?

By the way my car is a 1982 Trans am.

    Thanks, A.J.

You are going to have to convert it to a hydro setup I believe. Idk if they make it for fbodies, but on a honda there are conversion kits which allow you to bolt a bracket and some other stuff to the hydro trans and still use your cable clutch pedal and cable.

you will need a quicktime bellhousing ior convert your t56 to an lt1 inputshaft and midplate

I have just 350 not a lt1 or ls1. Did you mean that the other way around?
Why would I have to change it to a lt1 input shaft?

          "1998+ LS1 F-body T56
This is from the LS1 f-body, so it has a different length input shaft, and a completely different push-style clutch setup. The throwout bearing is a hydraulic unit that eliminates the clutch fork. To change this transmission to work with the LT1 clutch and bellhousing, you will need to replace the input shaft as well as the front cover of the transmission case (because it does not have the clutch fork pivot). An LS1 master cylinder might be necessary. The case and tailhousing dimensions are identical to the LT1 T56."

I believe you have to cut 2" further down the console. Width should be fine.

What if I used the bell housing off of the T56? Would that work? and then i jsut converted my car to hydraulic set up?

I think it would be easier to find a t 56 out of a 94-97 f body. THat way the bell housing and input shaft is already set up for a sbc.

I know it is possible to set it up, just dont know how. If you are recieving one hell of a deal on this transmission, it would be worth to look into what is necessary to put it together. Like curt said, the LT1 T-56 is basically a direct bolt-on.

My dad works at a dealership and some idiot turned in a 1998 or 97 Z28 6 speed camaro as a clunker... thats were I would be getting this trans from.. but my dad said it feels like the clutch is week.. The trans is free.. So im a little confused here.. in 1998 the did they go to a ls1 or something and the bellhousings were different?

Yes, in 98 they switched to Ls1's in the f-body. I pulled this up as well for you: "If you use the LS1 trans you will need an adapter plate, an extended pilot bushing, and you have to use the LS1 hydraulics because the LS1 trans has no provisions for a clutch fork (this part of the swap I'm not 100% familiar with, so I can't say if it's a bolt in or not)"
