  • 3rd Gen Down Help please

    1992 Chevy Camaro
    305 TBI 5 Speed

Alright guys it all started last night when i went to leave my girlfriends house the car started up really weak but I didnt think anything of it thought it was just cold and it was sitting for a long time. Started driving down the block and the car was running rough and wasnt acting straight got it on the free way and it held speeds of 70mph just fine got off the freeway at the first light started sputtering and when I went to accelerate through the light it stalled out. Started right back up and I limped it home. This morning again started up weak and ran rough. So I got it home changed 6 of 8 plugs I am having trouble getting the back two on both sides, any help? It started on 6 new plugs with the old ones in there ran great, I shut it off let it sit started it again and ran great for like 3 minutes then started to act up again sputtering and ending up stalling out. Fuel problem? Now it wont start so I am thinking a spark problem to get it started and still have some sort of fuel problem?

Heres what I am doing right now,

    New plugs, cap, router, coil...

So right now the car wont start but it seems like it is firing any ideas? bad gas, fuel pump, fuel filter?

    Thanks,

    Darren

Gal dang, it's the Red Flu.

Well you have a good start!
When was the last time she had a tune up like you are doing now?

I would check the fuel pressure for sure.

What do the plugs look like and do you have an SES light?

No SES light or nothing up on the dash at all, the plugs didnt look horible but I could tell they were old, I dont know when the last time there was a tune up done since I have only had the car about 10 months.

How do I check for fuel pressure on my car? When it was running good I could see the injectors on top spitting good strong fuel and looked really good..

so my dad called and said he can get it to fire on starting fluid but he didnt want to spray a lot in there to see if it would actually start, so it must be getting spark? I was thinking fuel pump but when the car was running it was spitting good amounts of gas, maybe just flooded it and now wont start? But why would the car be sputtering after it heats up?

You might not be getting enough fuel.
            You should check the pressure.

You are speed density right or do you have a MAF?

Speed density was standard from the factory starting in 1990 on the 3rd gens. The MAP sensor was already there on prior models so GM/Delco changed the software and cals over to use the MAP sensor once all the MAF sensors starting failing.

                    You should check the pressure.

I agree. I bought an inexpensive fuel pressure guage years ago that showed my fuel pressure from the pump was fine. My TPI (LB9) problem with my 3rd gen was that 4 of the 8 injectors were defective (low resistance across the terminals). The resistance of some would actually vary with the fuel pressure in the line. The resistance would change as the pressure dropped after the fuel pump prime at keyon/engine not cranked. TBI injectors should be much more durable in the 3rd gens than the port injectors.

I'll add that no codes were set but a TechII indicated the O2 sensor was reading lean when I tipped into the throttle like I would to pass someone on the highway. It should have gone rich as PE (Power Enrichment) fueling mode should have been active at the time. So don't expect the lack of a OBDI code in the 3rd gens make you think you do not have a serious spark or fueling problem.

When was the fuel filter last replaced?

Replace fuel filter. But check pressure from fuel pump first.
