  • Oil Pressure Problem

okay guys. ive heard a few things of what it could be, but heres the deal. when i start up and drive my car at speeds above stopping i get good oil pressure. but when i start to stop.. pressure goes way down. then i stop and pressure goes to 0 mark on the gauge. when i start to move it goes back up. i understand that the pressure is supposed to go down with lower RPMS but not that low... any ideas what the problem is?

belt slippage, internal pump friction stopping your pump at lower RPM, or faulty gauge..

how about is the engine oil full? I'm sure it is but your pump cannot stop since it is driven by the distributor which is ultimately driven by the crank (dist, cam, crank).

Maybe it is a pump going bad...

yeah i would say faulty pump... or even the oil pickup on the pump may have fallen down... ive had that happen it will drop it right down at lowrpm but once the oil is moving again it will splash enough up to make the pressure go up.... worse case is your bearings could slowly be going bad... what kind of pressure do you have at higher rpm?

sorry to hear about this man. I would hook up another gauge if I were you and see if it reads different. Hopefully it won't be a pump and it'll just be a faultly sensor.

One thing I noticed about mine is that it always appears to drop to 0, but it's because the gauge ranges from 0-100psi

Mine moves like its frickin possesed, but that's b/c I have a bad ground and can't seem to figure out why. But you said it happens when you hit the brake. What do you have done to the motor?

well you only need what 5psi for every 1000rpm to be safe... jsut take it easy till yo know for sure... i ragged the hell outta my old motor it had shot cam and crank bearings... i had 0 oil pressure all around mayube 5 psi at 5,000 rpm..lol but it ran all summer without a hickup...

                          most say 7-10 at idle.
It sounds as if you have some bad main/rod or cam bearings

First thing we need to know, how many miles are on it and what has been done to the motor? What weight oil are you running? If its just high mileage and wearing then there is a couple things you can do to help on the short term.

On the short term, and also for diagnosis. If you don't have or want to spend the money and time on a gauge, change the oil. Get some 20w/50 and a new filter and see if the pressure comes up. If it does you know its just wear and you will need to change the pump. However, its summer out and you should be able to safely run 20w/50 safely for awhile. That should make it so you can go to the meet and greet saturday.

I had this same situation with my 89 chevy truck 2 years ago. Then pressure would drop below 10 psi at idle, sometimes lower. I had another gauge handy so I put it on and sure enough it was right. At 150k+ not surprising the bearings were a little wore. The engine ran great so I saw no reason not to put some money in it. So I changed the oil pump. I went with a high volume pump. Don't go high pressure, high volume is enough to also raise the pressure, and you need both. I think I got a high volume melling pump in a kit with the pickup and pan gasket from summit for like $75. Took me about 2 hours to raise the motor drop the pan and change the pump. The result was 60 psi cold at idle and 20 psi when warm, even on a 90 degree day in stop and go traffic. going down the road it runs about 50 psi. That's your long term fix.

I would also recommend running Lucas oil treatment. I have had great luck with this stuff not only smoothing out how my engine runs, but it will also start a little easier and it will raise the oil pressure some. Not everybody likes additives, but its the only one I'll use.
