  • So I went and got another one....85 T/A

So I've been working on my 86 for awhile now, the one that had an engine fire. I stumbled across this one on Craigslist for $950, ended up getting it for $800. I figured it was going to cost me that much to get a carburetor and replace the windshield and headliner in the 86, let alone all of the work to be done.

It came with a 355 in it, which I have no interest in keeping. Its even got some cute shiny chrome on it. Anyone wanna buy it? I'm going to put the 305 from the 86 into it instead.

On the upside, they didnt do your standard hack and slash when they put the 355 in, all of the wiring is intact, including the injector harness. They just coiled them up and tie wrapped them out of the way.

So I'm thinking about putting the 305 in and getting a TPI rail for it, just to put it back to stock. Any ideas what a TPI setup is going to cost me? Anyone got one laying around?

Heres the pics. Theres some surface rust on the floorboards, nothing all the way through, and one bubble on the passenger side rear. Other than that, rust free!

Not bad for $800! Don't understand why you'd want to tear a 355 out for a 305 though.

        Nice score!

I'm with Tom and am curious on why you want to keep the 305...

Well..... I'm really not too much of a performance guy. Right now the car barely runs, I think the carb is horribly out of tune, timing is way off in left field, and none of the vacuum stuff is hooked up. For me personally, it looks easier to put it back "right" than to finish the install of this one. I just don't really know what I'm doing with this old tech stuff.

The second problem is, I don't think they did anything with the transmission when they put this monster in. When it shifts, it barks the tires, its hitting so hard. I'm afraid its going to rip the damn thing apart.

Now, if someone on here wants to volunteer to help me verify this stuff, and sort it out, I'd be happy to learn! I'll even buy the beer!

On a side note, does anyone know if headers from a 305 will bolt up to a 355? The 305 has Hooker super comps on it, running to straight duals.

So the 355 runs just needs some work? How much would you be looking to sell the engine for?

Yeah, it runs pretty strong, just starts to suck vacuum after a few minutes and stalls out. I know the timing is way off because the distributor isn't locked down, you can spin it pretty easy. It doesn't look like any of the vacuum lines are hooked up, theyre all plugged with bolts or spark plugs.

I dunno, whats a 355 worth? $350 bucks? I have no idea, to be honest.

My plan is to pull it out on Saturday, so if you want to hear it run, get ahold of me before then.

i gotta say that i would most definately try to tune the 355 to good running condition rather than put the 305 in it. IMHO 305's SUCK. No disrespect to any members on here that currently are running the 305 in their car...i understand that alot of the the 3rd gens on this site are keeping their cars stock and thats 100% fine, but to replace a 355 with a near stock 305 seems to be going in the wrong direction unless the 355 is gonna be more trouble to fix than to swap for the 305. Plus its not like this car would be completely stock because the #'s would not be matching. The thought of the 305 was there..have some hp with decent mpg's however the 305 i had was not fast and sucked gas like crazy. just my 2 pennies.
