  • 305 upgrades

I have a 1989 305 TPI motor with a stick shift and i am starting to look at little boltons for some more power

Has anyone done 1.6 roller rockers, headers, or other upgrades (around 200$ range) that help this motor out a little? what would be my best option?

Also has anybody one here removed their smog pump / ac compressor and gotten the serpentine to work ?

Hey Erik, there is a lot you can do to the 305, usually the same style upgrades you do to a 350 without the big gains. You will get flamed for putting any work into a 305 just as a fair warning but I think you should! I also have a 305/5 speed and I am putting a little work into it as well. Some popular wasy bolt ons of course are headers, exhaust, the LT1 cam swap, rockers and the list goes on... I have the SMOG removed from my car as well with all the emmisions and I can send you a picture of how to run the belt without the SMOG I am planning on deleting the A/C as well and just havent done it yet.

Start with the easy stuff, Headers, exhaust, removing SMOG and go from there. I really want to do the LT1 cam swap in mine I just havent had the time to do so. But there is other things you can do to wake up the 305 too, Upgrading your rear to a 3:73 gear or even higher really wakes these car's up. Just a thought

If you could send a picture of how you have it routed that would be great

mine has a cam in it but i dont know the specs (previous owner installed) but it sure sounds good

i figure any work I put into a 305 I can transfer over to a 350 as long as its an 87-up block ...i mean almost all sbc stuff is interchangable as long as i dont start tearing into the rotating assembly

That is exactly my thought too, have some fun with the 305 untill the 350 or bigger swap is finished. I have the piture on my home computer I will post it up for you when I get back home. The picture I have is just without the SMOG as I have not removed the A/C yet.

EDIT: I did a search over on TGO and here is the diagram I used when routing mine after the SMOG delete...

Are you talking about a stock LT1 cam, Darren? I happen to have one sitting in the garage I'd let go of for cheap.

That article was pretty good for the TBI, are there any good article over on TGO for the TPI (L89 I believe) upgrades? I have heard that one big thing with the TPI is the airflow and there is only so much you can do with the stock setup.

oh yeah TGO is a world of knowledge for thirdgens, if your not already I highly recommend signing up over there and starting to read. There is so much information over there at first you can easily become over whelmed but every problem that I have had with my car I have found the answer there and you will get the best advice on what mods to do and what not to do. If i get a min i'll look over there for something for the TPI 305 but most of the mods will be the same as the L03.

That's cool. I signed up a couple months ago, I just haven't looked around too much yet. Other things came up and I haven't been able to work on the car very much.
I'm sure a lot of the mods are the same as I remember reading about the peanut cam also.

there is a lot of good technical information ....but be careful there is also a good ammount of misinformation

I just ordered the A/C delete pulley from summit so I should have the serpentine system reconfigured by this weekend

I agree with this, just dont accept everything as fact and you'll be ok over on TGO.

So whose upgrading their 305? and what are you doing to it?
