  • Remove whale tail/spoiler???

My '89 GTA has that strange spoiler on it. I don't mind the look, but besides being ratty and needing work, I noticed it was heavy as hell when I took it off to paint the deck lid. Any body take theirs off permanently or replace it with a lighter type???? I'm tempted to toss it and get the lighter wing version.

Do you have the standard TA wing?

Yep, it's what came on them originally.

I had a friend with an '89 Formula 350, which I believe had a similar wing. We took it off so he could get it media blasted and painted. It felt like shark skin when it was clean and just pure heavy. Kinda like some cort of rubber. At the time, I had my '92 and when I hit the hatch button, it would open automatically. He played Hell trying to find something lighter cause he liked the "auto hatch" while his wing was off. He eventually ended up just putting it back on after finding out the price to reproduce the wing in fiberglass.

I just pulled the whale tail of my 1989 Formula to get the rust fixed

dont know if this will help much but here is a pic without it....just like you I am debating going spoiler less or putting that heavy beast back on or bolting on a stock firebird wing

I would go stock. You don't want to look like a ricer with a wing.

If either of you want to trade I have a stock Firebird spoiler. I'm looking for a "whale tail" spoiler that I can use as a mock-up for a project I'm working on. I could careless the condition I'm not going to be using it on a car, I just need it for measuring purposes. PM me if you're intersted.

Is this the wrap around spoiler (areo package)? The stock ones are pretty heavy, they make the fiberglass repos that look just like the factory ones but weigh a lot less. They don't give them away though, last time I was looking I think they were in the $350 to $400 range, and that was before shipping that big thing.
I have heard of some guys finding a stock one for the 91-92 formula (I think) that was a factory fiberglass wrap around and a lot lighter. The stye was a little different but it's an option.

If it was my car I'd put a stock wing back on. They look weird without any wing on them and the huge wings are gaudy IMO.
