  • TBI to TPI - Car Swap

Ok guys and gals, it is almost time to get rid of the blasphemed Trans Am. On another note the GTA has no oil-pressure when warm and only has oil-pressure when over like 2500RPM. This issue has me thinking "Hey I have a fresh engine with 3k miles on it in the TA." The thing I am having an issue is, is this.

What will I have to change about the TBI engine to make it TPI for the GTA?

Engine harness, computer, etc. I would seem easier to rebuild engine with the bad bearings. You might be lucky and just have an oil pump problem. That way you only pull or drop 1 engine not 2.

Sounds like a bunch of work

Bearings or even an oil pump are cheep compared to a whole new computer and what not.

You could change the bearings & oil pump and have the motor back in your car in just a few days.

If your talking about taking a TBI and making it into a TPI its just the top part of the engine. I thought about doing the same on my TBI. If you have the top part of a TPI engine it will all bolt right up.

How do you know it has no oil pressure?

Don't tell me you're relying off the stock OP gauge...mine used to randomly drop to 0, I'd flick it, and it'd go back to where it "should" be.

Get a mechanical gauge on there and check first, you might save yourself alot of trouble....

I've checked via plug in computer. Does the TPI unit bolt onto the heads on the TPI engine?

This is what im trying to say. The harness and computer is already in the GTA, the ONLY thing that would be different is the block with a TPI unit bolted on. The thing is, the block is from a TBI car.

                Umm...yeah.

It's just a two piece manifold. The lower bolts to the heads, like a normal intake - then the runners connect the upper plenum to the lower manifold/plenum...

Yeah, my buddy has one of them handheld computer things made by snap-on.

Good thing about the intake bolting straight on, somebody was telling me it wouldn't, I thought it would but might as well check before I dismantle it.

Impossible.....there isn't a sending unit for oil pressure the the ECM reads on these cars.

Also, you have to be careful on what years on TPI intakes you are dealing with...cause they all won't just "bolt-on". Sounds like you ned to do some homework....I would suggest doing some reading over on TGO.

Ah, ok, im really hoping it won' too difficult. The TBI block is a 1989 and the TPI block is a 1988. Seem real close to not just be plug and play, but why would GM make it easy for us .
